Did you know that as of 2024, the Philippines produces around 61,000 metric tons of solid waste every day?
About 33% of this waste ends up in landfills and dumpsites, while around 35% leaks into the open environment and our oceans.

There was one time I was about to throw away an empty plastic bottle when something hit me. We donโ€™t really recycle anymore. And itโ€™s not just me. I think this is true for many Filipinos today.

Before, plastic, paper, and cans had value. You could sell them. Now? One kilo barely matters, so most people just throw everything away.

So the question is..
Why has recycling become so hard?

Even when households try to segregate their trash, recycling still fails because everything ends up mixed.
You can sort your waste at home, but once it all goes into the same garbage collection area, it doesnโ€™t really change anything.
The system itself makes recycling difficult.

So I had this idea. Instead of forcing people to sort everything every day, why not make the system simpler?

What if trash collection was scheduled by type?

For example:
Mondays are for recyclables like plastic and cans.
Tuesdays are for cartons and paper.
Wednesdays are for biodegradable waste, like food scraps.
One type of trash per day. Simple. Clear. Easy to follow.

On recycling days, people can sell their plastic, paper, or cans through partner groups or junk shops. Even a small return gives people a reason to recycle instead of throwing everything away.

For biodegradable waste, we can partner with agricultural schools, like BSU, to turn this waste into organic fertilizer.

Why does this matter? Because agriculture in the PH/Benguet is essential, and our farmers deserve support. This doesnโ€™t have to be about profit.
The local government can subsidize the process or sell the fertilizer at a low price which is just enough to cover fuel, labor, and basic costs.

This also reduces our dependence on synthetic fertilizers, which are harmful to the environment and to human health.

Recycling fail because the current process is hard.
Make it easier. Make it rewarding. Thatโ€™s how we build a more responsible community

17th Day
๐Ÿ“2601 La Trinidad

I was able to go out today and collect trash for about 30 minutes.

How do I feel? Back to square one.

Itโ€™s been 2 months since my last cleanup, and today we collected 291 pieces of trash, including 15 bottles (2 of them had momma!!! I had to empty those because they were heavy, and removed the liquid and soil from some of the others).

I remember cleaning same area with no bottles left in sight.
And yet, not even 100 days laterโ€ฆ 15 bottles thrown again!

I watched a vlog about life in the Japanese countryside. Every morning, around 6:30 am., people go out to pick up trash. Just for a few minutes. Since itโ€™s usually minimal, they go home right after.

Why canโ€™t we do that here in the Philippines?

WHY DONโ€™T WE??

If we want to become a clean country, why not start with something simple like that?

Maybe at first, people need to be forced to join.. at least to build the habit.

Kelangan natin pwersahin ang ating mga sarili.

Of course, at the beginning, many will complain. โ€œBakit tayo? Dapat gobyerno gumagawa niyan!โ€
But thatโ€™s the wrong mindset. Yes, the government has a big responsibility but so do WE.

Change wonโ€™t happen if we keep waiting for others to act.

Hereโ€™s my thought for our local government:
Most of the trash I see around comes from children or students.
So why not start with them?

Letโ€™s say once every quarter: March, June, September, December. 1 day, just 40 minutes (20mins to go to the area, 20mins to clean).
Students can go out to nearby spots and clean for even 20 minutes. Perhaps the last hour of a Friday?

Twenty minutes may sound short, but when hundreds of kids do it together? THATโ€™S POWERFUL.

I know because when I pick up trash alone for 20 minutes, I already collect a LOT. Imagine if a whole school did the same. Imagine if hundreds of schools do the same.

The cost? We donโ€™t need much. just garbage bags or bins, which can be sponsored by schools, the government, or private donors. Minimal cost, massive impact.

And the best part? Discipline.

This simple act teaches kids AWARENESS, responsibility, and respect for their environment.
Once you get used to picking up trash outside, you also start cleaning up after yourself at home.

Maybe to our Honorable Mayors, maybe we can make this happen.
I saw the cleanup drive in Bolo Creek last month and it was so nice to see the initiative.
Before the trash ends up in our rivers, letโ€™s stop it from the land.

Imagine the impact ๐Ÿ™‚

Itโ€™s been a while. Just want to share some observations from when I picked up trash last August. Havenโ€™t done it for the past two months cause lifeโ€™s been busy and itโ€™s been raining a lot.

Thereโ€™s so much I want to say, but I kept it short.

Day 15

Picked up trash for 31 minutes today. I was aiming for 40 minutes but had to stop when it started raining. Most of the trash was concentrated in areas where people usually stand by, parking spots, and places where kids often play.

Just look at the bottles I picked up today. Imagine if all of these ended up in the creek connected to the river.

I got really pi**ed off when I saw the 1.5L bottle. Seriously?

Also, picked up trash for 40 minutes today since I missed some days this week.

People keep throwing new candy wrappersโ€ฆ
