His hands were defined by a relentless rhythm: gripping a pen during daytime lectures, wrapping lumpia during class intervals, and clutching a flashlight on night patrol. Though the heavy anchors of financial strain once made a college degree feel like an impossible dream, his grit outlasted the grind.

Four years ago, France Louie Simbajon left his father in Zamboanga del Sur to join his mother in Asipulo, Ifugao. Although financial hardship made higher education seem out of reach, he found a glimmer of hope through the free education offered by Ifugao State Universityโ€“Lamut Campus. He enrolled in the Bachelor of Agricultural Technology program, majoring in Animal Technology, while still facing the challenge of making ends meet.

While studying and serving as an advanced ROTC cadet, France looked for ways to support his daily expenses. Inspired by a practicum subject during his sophomore year, he began selling lumpiang shanghai and dynamite spring rolls to classmates and instructors. In his third year, he continued to excel in ROTC and eventually took on the responsibility of training, disciplining, and mentoring second- and first-year cadets.

The school break before his fourth year pushed France to look for employment as declining snack sales made it difficult to earn enough money. When the universityโ€™s Campus Security Services opened slots for additional personnel, he eagerly applied, completed all requirements, and was eventually hired as a campus security guard, willing to serve the institution that was helping build his future.

However, when academic year 2025โ€“2026 began, France faced his most demanding schedule. By day, he attended classes and fulfilled academic requirements; during vacant periods, evenings, weekends, and holidays, he worked as a campus security guard. As a graduating student, he also had to complete his off-campus on-the-job training and write his narrative reportsโ€”all while returning to campus every night for his security shift.

โ€œI-enjoy mo na lang โ€˜yung ano (trabaho) kahit mahirap,โ€ France said, sharing his approach to his hectic schedule. Despite the physical and mental exhaustion from shifting roles, he mentioned that a positive mindset, a never-say-die attitude, and steadfast prayers strengthened him through it all. (โ€œJust enjoy the job, even if itโ€™s difficultโ€)

โ€œIsipin mo na, โ€˜Ah, sige kaya โ€™to.โ€™ Pag matapos mo yung oras ng duty parang maiisip mo, โ€˜Ay, kaya pala,โ€™โ€ France said with a smile. (โ€œYou just tell yourself, โ€˜Alright, I can do this.โ€™ Once your shift ends, you realize, โ€˜Wow, I actually did it.โ€™โ€)

During the 17th commencement exercises of IFSU-Lamut Campus, France stood proudly alongside 1,501 fellow graduates. He had once thought that a college education was completely out of reach, but his determination rewrote his destiny. Aside from his motherโ€™s help, he was able to meet his own needs while away from his family through his hard-earned money.

Franceโ€™s college journey stands as a powerful testament to human resilience. While financial hardships weigh heavily on underprivileged students, he proved that when a dream is matched with diligence, persistence, and unwavering faith, no finish line is truly out of reach.

The Ifugao State Universityโ€“Lamut Campus officially recognized 1,501 graduates during its 17th Commencement Exercises held at the Luis Hora Gymnasium in Lamut, Ifugao, on May 18, 2026.

Carrying the theme, โ€œCulturally Driven Resilience: IFSU Graduates Fostering Excellent and Sustainable Futures,โ€ the commencement exercises were conducted in two consecutive ceremonies. Both programs formally opened with the entrance of the university mace, academic procession, and presentation of colors.

The morning ceremony honored graduates from the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), College of Agriculture and Sustainable Development (CASD), and College of Health Sciences (CHS). Serving as guest of honor and commencement speaker, Dr. Jimmy G. Catanes, Director IV of the Commission on Higher Education Central Office, reminded the graduates that learning extends far beyond the classroom.

"Today you receive a degree, but education does not end with a diploma or a certificate,โ€ Catanes said. He emphasized that education is a lifelong journey of developing knowledge, skills, values, and competence.

In her final commencement address as university president, Dr. Eva Marie Codamon-Dugyon encouraged the graduates to stand firm in their identity and purpose. "Own your journey, take responsibility for your path,โ€ she said. She also urged the graduates to aspire for excellence with integrity and to rely on Godโ€™s strength as they navigate what lies ahead.

Speaking on behalf of the graduates during the morning ceremony, Reah Mae F. Ballucanac, a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Bachelor of Science in Tourism, expressed gratitude to parents, instructors, mentors, the institution, the university president, and God for their unwavering support throughout their academic journey.

Ballucanac also challenged her fellow graduates to become instruments of positive change in society by using their knowledge and abilities to contribute meaningful solutions to societal concerns. She concluded her speech by reminding her fellow graduates that true success lies not in fame or titles, but in living a life that honors the Lord.

Meanwhile, the afternoon ceremony recognized graduates from the College of Advanced Education (CAE), College of Criminal Justice Education (CCJE), College of Computing Sciences (CCS), and College of Education (COE). Provincial Governor Jerry U. Dalipog, guest of honor and commencement speaker for the second ceremony, commended the graduates for their perseverance, resilience, and sacrifices in reaching this milestone.

โ€œAs you step into the future, may you be guided by courage, strengthened by faith, and inspired by hope,โ€ Dalipog said.

Following the presidentโ€™s charge, Proverbs B. Medalla, Magna Cum Laude graduate of Bachelor of Elementary Education, delivered the graduatesโ€™ response for the afternoon ceremony. โ€œToday, we dedicate our success to our dear parents and guardians, even to our teachers who molded us and helped us,โ€ Medalla said. Quoting Jeremiah 29:11, she reminded her fellow graduates that greater opportunities and a hopeful future await them beyond graduation.

Furthermore, Hon. Jeramil B. Bahni, President of the IFSU Alumni Associations Federation, Inc., led the induction of the graduates as official alumni of the university. The ceremony also included the graduatesโ€™ pledge of loyalty to the institution, followed by the singing of the IFSU hymn and the exit of the university mace and colors.

On this Labor Day, we honor the strength, dedication, and resilience of workers everywhereโ€”the builders of our communities, the dreamers who innovate, and the everyday heroes who keep life moving forward. May this day remind us that progress is born from hard work, and that every effort, no matter how small, contributes to the greater good. Today we celebrate not just labor, but the dignity and pride that come with it.
