Jomar B. Bumidang, a faculty member of the College of Arts and Sciences, led the first session, "Knowing Me, Knowing You: Understanding the Self in a Changing World," which helped students explore their identity, manage their emotions, and accept new things.

In 2018, I stood on the edge of something I couldn’t yet name—a dream, maybe, or a battle. All I knew was that the Palarong Pambansa, the national stage is where athletes carved their names into memory, it's within reach. And all I wanted was a pair of volleyball shoes. Not for vanity, not for trend, but for function. For a sense of readiness. For something that told me I belonged.

So, I turned to the person I had always believed would be my first cheerleader—my mother. I asked her, simply, sincerely, and with the quiet hope only a child can carry: “Can you buy me shoes?”

But what I got wasn’t a soft refusal, or even a practical “not now.” What I received were words that cut like broken glass beneath my feet. Words that didn’t just say no—but said you’re not enough. Words soaked in shame and disappointment; thrown like stones I didn’t know how to dodge. She made me feel small, like chasing something as big as my dream was ridiculous, selfish even.

I walked away from that moment with more than empty hands. I walked away carrying questions I never knew I’d have to ask. Who will love me now? Am I not worthy of something as simple as shoes? Am I a failure for dreaming too loud? Was I asking for too much? Or just asking the wrong person?

They haunted me, those questions. They followed me into practices, into silent nights, into every serve and every jump. But the thing about pain—when you don’t let it drown you—it sharpens you. It taught me how to move without music, how to train without applause, how to play with nothing but grit and the ghost of a dream pushing me forward.

I didn’t get the shoes I asked for. But I found something better. I found myself. I wore whatever I had—old, maybe worn-out, maybe too tight—but I played like the court was mine. I used every ounce of strength, every tear I refused to cry in public, every silent “I’ll show you” whispered under my breath.

And when the whistle blew on that final game, it wasn’t just a medal we brought home—it was gold. We won. We became champions. And I carried more than just a victory back home—I carried proof. That no, I was never a failure. I was fire. I was faith. I was the answer to every painful question I’d ever asked.

You see, it was never really about the shoes.

It was about what I’d do when I didn’t have them. When comfort was stripped away, when support fell silent, and when love felt conditional. That was the test. And I passed it—not by running from the pain, but by running with it.

I learned that sometimes, the people who are supposed to protect you might not understand your path. That sometimes, rejection is the universe’s way of teaching you to stand taller on your own. That even when love feels out of reach, self-worth is something you can lace up and wear proudly—no matter how worn the shoes beneath you are.

So now, whenever I look back at that time, I no longer flinch. I don’t shrink. I stand taller.

Because I am not defined by what I was denied.
I am defined by what I became despite it.

And every time I tie my laces before a match, I remember it’s not the shoes that carry me. It’s the questions I answered with action. It’s the pain I turned into purpose. It’s the quiet resilience of someone who refused to let hurt be the end of the story.
It’s me.
