KEEP SILENT OR ELSE...

The vessel loaded sugar in Santos, Brazil for discharge in Lagos, Nigeria. During loading, crew noticed stevedores accessing the conveyor tops during rainy weather, unaware of any illegal activity at the time. After arrival in Lagos, the vessel waited at anchorage for document clearance before berthing and starting discharge.

Three days into discharge, the crew discovered two sacks of suspected contraband in Cargo Hold No. 1 and immediately reported it. When the officer went to investigate, the chief foreman threatened to kill him and the crew if the discovery was reported. The local agent was contacted but was also threatened.

The contraband, estimated to be worth about USD 200,000, was discharged ashore by bulldozers, after which the stevedore group was replaced, indicating the situation had been “cleared.” The incident appeared to be a diversion to cover larger drug shipments.

The officer believes this is a large, organized syndicate involving stevedores and potentially the charterer, shipper, and receiver, with corruption extending through local authorities, placing seafarers in serious danger.
