𝐍𝐄𝐖𝐒 | 𝐓𝐖 𝐣𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐬 𝐎𝐒𝐒𝐄𝐈, 𝐛𝐚𝐠𝐬 𝟑 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬
𝑏𝑦 𝑁𝑖𝑐ℎ𝑜𝑙𝑎𝑠 𝐸𝑙𝑖𝑧𝑖𝑒𝑟 𝐴𝑐𝑜𝑏𝑎

The Williamite (TW) garnered three awards in the recently concluded Organization of Student Services Educators, Inc., (OSSEI) National Training Workshop on Campus Journalism on September 25-27, 2025, at Crown Legacy Hotel, Baguio City.

The event, attended by 24 publications from both public and private higher education institutions in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, featured sessions related to various fields in campus journalism.

Representing the publication, Julius Caezar Tugas, head layout and graphics artist, and Adrian Dumayas, mobile journalist, placed second in the Page Layout & Design and in the Photo Essay competitions, respectively.

Furthermore, TW’s recent official Tabloid issue took third place in the Tabloid/Semi-Broadsheet (Print Publications) category.

“It was an honor to be among the different student publications across the country. The experience was truly one to remember, especially with the awards we brought home on the last day, and I will always be proud of the publication for all of it,” expressed TW's Editor-in-Chief Denise Tagatac.

Tagatac also noted that with most of the staff being new to the press this year, the awards marked not only personal triumphs but shared achievements that opened lines to several stories the publication will continue to write together.

The conference was also attended by Managing Editor Nicholas Elizier Acoba, News Editor Justin Tacderan, and Development Communication Editor Jada Amara Calapini, together with the publication’s adviser, Robert Angel Mercurio.

Rising cardboards like fragile shields, ink bleeds with words of rage, of demand, of struggles. We gather, not as opposers, nor as blind followers, but as people bound by one truth: 𝐼𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑎𝑏𝑠𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑗𝑢𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑒, 𝑠𝑜𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑖𝑔𝑛𝑡𝑦 𝑏𝑒𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑒𝑠 𝑛𝑜𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑏𝑢𝑡 𝑜𝑟𝑔𝑎𝑛𝑖𝑧𝑒𝑑 𝑟𝑜𝑏𝑏𝑒𝑟𝑦.

We are the masses—neither saints nor villains, but witnesses. We carry the weight of anomalous projects—built on greed, yet paid for by our sweat and taxes. We do not gather to destroy, nor simply to celebrate; we gather to remind the rulers that justice without the people is incomplete, and that a nation without justice is a nation robbed.

Today marked the 150th Founding Anniversary of the Society of the Divine Word (SVD)—a day honoring the SVD’s enduring mission and unwavering dedication to evangelization and service to the people. For more than a century, SVD missionaries in the Philippines have reached out to uplift communities, establish schools, foster social development, and nurture faith networks that continue to transform countless lives. Their commitment and outreach became a luminous example and inspiration not only in the country but also across the world.

As the Divine Word College of Laoag, Inc., joined the celebration, the community looked back with appreciation at how the SVD had built a strong legacy of education deeply rooted in faith, academic excellence, and service to others. The institution stood as one of the enduring contributions of the missionaries, shaping responsible leaders, dedicated professionals, and servant-hearted Divinians.

This day reminded everyone of the call to continue living the SVD spirit as one family motivated by faith, love, and service. These endless passions of the SVD were upheld as guiding lights for daily life being the ‘Witnesses to the Word’. Indeed, the mission lived on in every act of compassion, reflecting the reminder: “The mission continued when we chose to serve with compassion.”

The Divine Word College of Laoag, Inc., community gathered together in a solemn celebration of faith, tradition, and the enduring 150-year legacy of the Society of the Divine Word.

Simultaneous with the celebration is the initiation of the Sacrament of Confirmation.

"Today is a beautiful day. We honor God, through the intercession of our Blessed Mother, and we sanctify even this day because our children through the gifts of the Holy Spirit, will witness like Mary, who accompanied her Son from His birth to His death and may our children do likewise to follow Jesus every moment in their Christian life."

Thus said Rev. Msgr. Joel B. Barut, VG, in his homily during the Eucharistic Celebration today, September 8.

Msgr. Barut, in his homily, reiterated the significance of receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation among young Catholics of today, setting the Blessed Mother as a model. He also emphasized the important role of parents in the evangelical life of their children, just like the Blessed Mother who faithfully guided and nurtured Jesus in His mission.

Every year, September 8 holds a special place in the life of the Church—it is the birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary. For the Divine Word College of Laoag, this day is more than just a feast; it is a moment of gratitude and joy as we honor our patroness and mother.

Mary’s story is one of humility and steadfast faith. Her quiet “yes” to God continues to echo through time, offering the DWCL community a living example of discipleship and trust.

As we celebrate her nativity, we are invited to reflect on the values she embodied—faith, service, and openness to God’s will. More than a commemoration, it is a call to carry her light into our daily lives and to grow closer as one family in Christ.

The College gathered for its first Friday Mass of the school year, inviting the community to reflect on openness to God’s renewing grace. In his homily, Rev. Fr. Jhun Joel L. Templa, SVD, emphasized the need to balance the old with the new— reminding everyone that God always offers transformation if we allow space for it.

As September begins, we are called to let Jesus, the bridegroom, transform our hearts. With souls made for a relationship with the divine, we are invited to rejoice in His presence, grow in faith, and remain united as one DWCL family.
