While pupils or students are regularly checked, teachers are expected to be okay, strong, patient, and available regardless of what they might be feeling inside.
In school, there is a strong focus on the mental health and well-being of pupils or students, which is important. Programs are conducted to help pupils deal with stress, anxiety, and learning challenges.
However, what is forgotten is that teachers, who support these pupils or students every day, also face mental health struggles.
Many teachers silently suffer due to their heavy responsibilities. They handle not only lesson plans and grades but also student behaviors, complaints from parents, and pressure from other people. While pupils or students are asked how they are doing, no one seems to ask teachers, βMaβam/sir, are you still okay? β
They get tired, frustrated, and discouraged, especially when their efforts are overlooked or taken for granted. Some might be struggling with anxiety, burnout, or even depression. They have no space to talk about it.
Itβs now time to provide teachers with activities that will help their mental health, just like regular self-care talks, work-life balance seminars, recreational activities, peer sessions, recreational activities, and more.
After all, teachers are human too.
