The December solstice marks the start of winter in the Northern Hemisphere, and the start of summer in the South. The winter solstice is characterized as the point in orbit where the Earth’s tilt points the northern hemisphere away from the Sun the most. It can also be characterized as the longest duration of night experienced (longest duration of night will vary with location).
