Fewer than 1,000 Southern Beaufort Sea polar bears remain, shared between the Alaskan and Canadian Arctic. This critically imperiled subpopulation of polar bears faces numerous threats, from a rapidly changing climate to the disturbance of oil and gas development across the region. Now these bears are facing the looming threat of seismic testing—a destructive method of locating fossil fuels beneath the surface that can cause winter dens to collapse right when mother bears are rearing their cubs.

In the Western Arctic Reserve (NPR-A) the rocky cliffs of the Colville River provide the perfect habitat for nesting falcons like peregrines and gyrfalcons. This is one of many reasons the Colville River Special Area was established, recognizing the special ecological value of the region.

This and other landscapes are at risk from fast-tracked oil and gas investments and moves to deregulate the development process.

When someone shows you they don't respect a line the moment it's drawn — believe them. 🚩

The Western Arctic Caribou Herd Working Group has called for urgent action to combat the precipitous decline of caribou across the since the group convened last December, warning that without immediate action the herd could lose another 20% by 2027.

Instead, the government has fast-tracked oil and gas development, with extensive leasing across the Western Reserve.

The BLM is trying to do away with thorough environmental impact assessments for oil and gas development in the Western Arctic. The AOGA proposal aims to shift permitting to MANDATORY approval of all permit requests that claim to meet a generic list of environmental safeguards, essentially turning the BLM into a rubber stamp for corporations. And the kicker? Oil and gas companies could apply for exemptions from those environmental standards and the BLM could not change or rescind a permit except in the case of fraud.

This is BAD for the Arctic amd BAD for the planet.
