The next few months are expected to bring a record-breaking El Niño year, delivering volatile weather from floods to droughts, and from cold snaps to wildfires. And while El Niño is a natural cyclical occurrence, it historically has been mitigated by some of the planet's strongest climate regulators — such as the Arctic jetstream.

The Arctic jetstream doesn't cause El Niño but a disregulated jetstream does mean El Niño effects can be much more severe and further reaching. When the Arctic jetstream is stable, it helps prevent wild temperature swings, regulates weather, and makes everything from agriculture forecasts to airline turbulence more predictable. Unfortunately, climate change is destabilizing the jetstream, leaving weather cycles like El Niño to wreak even more havoc than usual.

It's never been more critical to . What happens here has far-reaching impacts all across the globe. We should be safeguarding this planetary regulator, not fast-tracking oil and gas on our Arctic public lands.

ConocoPhillips just announced their Q1 2026 earnings and they came in at $2.2 Billion.

That's a lot of money to earn in three months. But you know what's worth even more money in that same time frame? THE ARCTIC NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE.

The Refuge's ecosystem services alone (that's the dollar value of the work wild landscapes do to clean our air, purify our water, support our fisheries, etc) are worth around $3.75 billion every single quarter of every single year.

And the best part? It pays dividends to every single person on Earth.

Some places are too valuable to lose. Tell fossil fuel companies to stay OUT of the Arctic Refuge.

Last week, giant screen film THE ARCTIC: OUR LAST GREAT WILDERNESS made a special appearance at alongside filmmaker , narrator and award-winning producer , and Executive Director, Kristen Moreland.

The timing of this event couldn't have been more important as the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, including the Coastal Plain—caribou birthing grounds sacred to the Gwich'in, faces a lease sale for fossil fuel development on June 5th.
