PFL – Pre Fader Listen for Proper Gain Staging
PFL is a common live mixing approach for setting the right signal level (gain staging) of our inputs.
But based on my experience, I’ve noticed some issues when relying only on PFL meter references. Here are some points I consider:
Not all inputs need 0dB PFL reference.
Setting input through PFL at 0dB on the main meter can sometimes make certain instruments too loud at the required output. That’s why I often use another method—starting with the fader first before adjusting the gain.
Example: keyboards or certain instruments may already sound very loud, even when their PFL level looks low on the meter.
Room and system factors matter.
A 0dB PFL reference should also take into account the size of the room, number of speakers, and the overall setup.
Different contexts, different results.
From my experience, the 0dB PFL reference works better in broadcast and recording. But in live mixing, I’ve had more consistent and stable results using higher fader resolution.
At the end of the day, if PFL at 0dB works better for you, and another method works better for me, let’s respect each other’s approach. After all, we share the same goal: clean input and output for a great mix.
