Today we celebrate Katie John Day. Katie John, a beloved Ahtna elder and culture bearer, was born in 1916 and lived most of her life in the northern Wrangell Mountains, an area now included within Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve. She passed on cultural, language and subsistence life skills and traditions to younger generations. She garnered national and international attention after a decades-long fight to reclaim fishing rights for her people. In 2019, Alaska Senate Bill 78 was signed into law and established May 31st as “Katie John Day.” In 2024, she was recognized by the U.S. Senate for strengthening subsistence rights in Alaska. Katie John passed in 2013, but her legacy lives on.

Santos has achieved first oil at the Pikka Phase 1 development on the North Slope, while Glenfarne Group and ConocoPhillips Alaska announced a long-term gas supply agreement advancing Phase One of the Alaska LNG project. Together, these major milestones mark significant progress for Alaska’s energy future, infrastructure development, and long-term resource growth.

If your ESG strategy doesn’t change how you communicate,
it’s just a slide deck.

While working on a workforce development program, an Elder shared something with me that stuck,
he translated common mining terms into Yup’ik.

Not for optics.
For understanding.

That moment reframed something simple:

Language is part of the work.

How often do we enter communities without saying quyana or miigwech?
How often do we build presentations, reports, or campaigns without thinking about the words we’re using—or who they’re for?

We’re quick to adapt when we travel.
We learn phrases. We try.

So why doesn’t that same effort show up in the communities where we actually work?

This isn’t about perfection.
It’s about intention.
