A road that cuts through a sanctuary, and “flood control” crumbles

In April 2025, the TessDrive team joined Toyota Motor Philippines in Mounts Iglit-Baco Natural Park (MIBNP), Occidental Mindoro, to turn over a Toyota Tamaraw utility van directly to the dedicated Bantay Tamaraw rangers.

Getting there told a sobering story of its own. Traversing the Victoria–Sablayan Road from Calapan Port meant navigating unfinished, heavily excavated sections that closely followed the Amnay River. Tamaraw Conservation Program (TCP) contacts on the ground confirmed that the road corridor directly encroaches upon the habitat of the critically endangered Tamaraw (Bubalus mindorensis).

Now, disaster has struck the same river basin. Recent reports confirm that a massive section of the flood control river wall along the Amnay River in Barangay Claudio Salgado, Sablayan, has completely collapsed following monsoon rains. Millions in public funds were washed away in minutes, submerging surrounding communities, destroying rice fields, and displacing vulnerable families.

🚨 Encroaching critical sanctuaries: Cutting roads through fragile ecosystems without rigorous ecological safeguards directly fractures the last refuge of our endemic wildlife.
🚨 Accountability on public infrastructure: When river dikes and flood mitigation structures crumble under ordinary monsoon surges, that’s more than negligence—it endangers human lives, wipes out local livelihood, and jeopardizes long-term conservation work.

True mobility and public works should protect communities and natural heritage—not leave them vulnerable to disaster. It is time for authorities and oversight bodies to step up, investigate substandard public works, and put real accountability on the road.

Cross-country electric: 1,500-km inter-island road trip in a BEV

Can a full electric vehicle conquer a 1,500-km cross-country journey across Philippine islands? A BEV owner just proved it’s practical, comfortable, and significantly cheaper.

Taking his GAC AION V electric SUV on a multi-island route spanning Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, owner Romel Emperado dispelled the long-standing range anxiety.

🛣️ 1,492 km across three island groups: Romel Emperado navigated highway stretches and RoRo ferry crossings through Samar and Leyte, relying on regenerative braking and daytime driving to record an outstanding efficiency of 13.9 kWh/100 km.

🚢 Cebu to Mindanao RoRo Adventure. Meanwhile, Rommel Laranjo replaced his diesel SUV with the AION V, crossing two ferry links with family while keeping the air conditioning running during long boarding queues without engine idle penalties—arriving home with 36% battery (183 km range) to spare.
