Happening tomorrow!

Gangsterism{s} situates contemporary Philippine cinema within the aftermath of the September 21, 2025 anti-corruption protests, when the stateโ€™s responseโ€”warrantless arrests, revived sedition charges, and police panicโ€”laid bare a deep anxiety within the ruling classes. Whether read as a descent into authoritarianism or as fear provoked by the disruptive force of the lumpenproletariat, the moment reveals a bourgeois imagination shaken by the sudden visibility of those long excluded from its illusions of order and โ€œdevelopment.โ€ The films in this program emerge from that rupture, confronting how power, surveillance, and violence reorganize both the streets and the image.

Through Gio Lingaoโ€™s How He Died is Not Controversial, Carlo Cieloโ€™s Baha, and Isiah Medinaโ€™s Gangsterism, the program traces a cinema that thinks under pressure: cameras pursued, footage salvaged, and images cut against the demand for permission and control. These works refuse neat political legibility, instead exposing contradiction as formโ€”where disorder becomes a historical force and filmmaking itself mirrors the struggle to exist under bourgeois scrutiny. As cinema and the streets echo one another in unsettling the present order, Gangsterism{s} invites audiences to witness, reflect, and engage with these urgent works. Join us for the screening and encounter a cinema that confronts power at the moment it begins to tremble.

UPFI Videotheque, UP Film Center

We officially kick off the Philippine edition of Rising Waters, Raising Rights: Human Rights Through the Lens of Water with a launch screening and opening conversation on cinema, water, and human rights.

Curated by Eunice Helera, the Philippine edition brings together films that explore climate precarity, q***r becoming, coastal labor, memory, and community resistance โ€” all through the symbolic and material power of water.

This launch is co-organized with Film Workers Against Corruption and Elevated Frames PH, in partnership with Kinoise PH and Laya Coffee Diliman, with UPFI Film Center as our venue partner.

Online screenings will run from December 10โ€“20, 2025 via Cinemata.

Lakambini, Gregoria de Jesus is not the typical bayani biopic, blending documentary with historical fiction. The result is a love letter to the hero of the Katipunan that channels her revolutionary spirit in all kinds of ways.

Lakambini is now showing in cinemas. Go catch it on the big screen and at QCinema this year!
