Looking for children's shows that are gentle, engaging, and offer opportunities for learning and conversation?
Here are six shows some autistic children may enjoy:
๐ถ ๐๐น๐๐ฒ๐ โ imaginative play, emotions, family relationships, and everyday social experiences.
๐งก ๐ฆ๐ฒ๐๐ฎ๐บ๐ฒ ๐ฆ๐๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ โ early learning, language, social-emotional development, and inclusion. Its See Amazing in All Children autism initiative has also been studied and found to increase autism knowledge and acceptance among parents.
๐จ ๐ฃ๐ฎ๐ฏ๐น๐ผ โ explores emotions, unfamiliar situations, friendships, and everyday experiences from the perspective of an autistic character.
๐ฟ ๐ฃ๐๐ณ๐ณ๐ถ๐ป ๐ฅ๐ผ๐ฐ๐ธ โ gentle storytelling, nature, curiosity, friendship, and exploration.
๐ ๐ง๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ต ๐ง๐ฟ๐๐ฐ๐ธ โ friendship, imagination, everyday adventures, and gentle problem-solving.
But here's the important part:
Every child responds differently to sounds, pacing, colors, characters, storylines, and sensory stimulation.
Watch how your child responds.
Does the show help them engage, communicate, learn, or enjoy shared time?
Or does it leave them overstimulated, dysregulated, or unable to transition away from the screen?
Those observations matter.
And what about screen time?
For autistic children, the goal shouldn't simply be โmore educational screen time.โ
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends looking at the whole media experienceโincluding the child, the content, what screens may be crowding out, opportunities to calm, and family communication. For autistic children specifically, AAP guidance recommends co-viewing when possible, maintaining unplugged times, protecting sleep and physical activity, and using a visual timer or schedule when helpful.
But they shouldn't replace the things children also need:
Real communication
Human connection
Movement and physical activity
Creative play
Hands-on learning
Adequate sleep
Time away from screens
And for some autistic children, a favorite show can actually become a bridge to learningโfor example, using a beloved character to practice emotions, vocabulary, counting, storytelling, or social situations.
Quality matters. Context matters. And the child matters. ๐
