Effects of Former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte on the Filipino Value System
Former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s leadership style had a profound impact on the Filipino value system, shaping social behavior, political discourse, and cultural attitudes. His frequent use of profanity and strong language, even in formal addresses, contributed to a shift in public communication norms. While some Filipinos viewed his bluntness as a sign of authenticity and relatability, others feared that it eroded traditional values such as delicadeza (propriety) and galang (respect). This normalization of offensive language influenced how people, especially the youth, engage in discussions, often fostering a more aggressive and confrontational tone in debates.
Duterte’s strong stance on crime and his controversial war on drugs reinforced a belief in swift and often violent justice. His administration’s approach led to the desensitization of many Filipinos to extrajudicial killings and human rights violations. While some saw this as necessary to maintain peace and order, it also undermined respect for due process and legal institutions. Over time, this shift in perspective affected how justice and morality were perceived, with many prioritizing immediate results over ethical considerations.
His remarks about women, which often included sexist jokes and controversial statements, also influenced gender norms and attitudes. While some dismissed these as mere humor, others expressed concerns that they contributed to a culture of misogyny and gender-based discrimination. Such rhetoric threatened the progress of gender equality in the country, reinforcing outdated stereotypes and making it more difficult for women to gain the respect and opportunities they deserve.
Moreover, Duterte’s leadership deepened political polarization in the Philippines. His supporters admired his decisiveness and unfiltered speech, while his critics viewed him as authoritarian and damaging to democratic principles. This divide led to an environment where political discussions often became personal attacks rather than constructive debates. As a result, tolerance for differing opinions diminished, and a culture of hostility in political discourse grew.
The younger generation was particularly influenced by Duterte’s leadership and media presence. His unfiltered rhetoric and aggressive style of communication became more prevalent on social media, shaping the way young people express their views on governance and leadership. While some became more politically engaged, others adopted a more confrontational and disrespectful approach to discussions. This shift in communication norms highlighted the growing influence of digital platforms in shaping public opinion and behavior.
PRESCRIPTION:
Duterte’s presidency left a lasting impact on Filipino values, both positively and negatively. While he instilled a sense of nationalism and strong leadership, his approach also contributed to a decline in respect for human rights, traditional Filipino courtesies, and democratic principles. Moving forward, it is essential to promote a culture of respectful discourse, uphold ethical leadership, and reinforce the importance of due process and human dignity. Educational institutions, media organizations, and community leaders must take an active role in fostering values that encourage constructive debate, respect for diversity, and gender equality. By learning from the past, Filipinos can work toward a society that balances strong leadership with compassion, justice, and inclusivity.
