📍BARCELONA RUINS PARK, Barcelona, Sorsogon

Escuela Pia located next to Presidencia Ruins in Barcelona, Sorsogon, was constructed in the 1800s during the Spanish colonial period of the Philippines. This historical building, made from stones, sea corals, and lime, was initially intended as a school for the children of the ilustrados, or wealthy Spanish conquistadores, and the few educated Filipinos. Filipino natives, derogatorily referred to as Indios, were excluded from this educational institution.

During the American colonization from 1898 to 1946, Escuela Pia was renamed the Stone Building. It then opened its doors to children from all social backgrounds, serving as classrooms for the town's central district. Despite its noble purpose, the building eventually fell into disrepair and was condemned. Today, it stands as a testament to the layered history of education and colonial influence in the region, marking the transition from exclusive colonial education to a more inclusive American-influenced system.
