Prices of rice have seen an increase at the local supermarket in Tabaco City, Albay after the government lifted the price ceiling. Prices now range from P45 to P50 pesos per kilo depending on the type of rice.

To recall, President Ferdinand Marcos ordered price cap on rice last September 1, 2023, forcing retailers to sell rice at P41 to P45 pesos per kilo.

Children who are forced to work make up 1 in 4 victims of human trafficking. Every year, up to 1.2 million kids are victims of trafficking. Those who are trafficked frequently perform slave labor on farms, in mines, and in factories. Up to 10 million kids worldwide are victims of contemporary forms of child slavery.

In the Philippines, forced child labor continues to be a problem. Until when will we be able to swallow the disgust that should come from seeing children working instead of spending their days carefree and studying?

In the recent survey of Fair Works Philippines, there are almost 500,000 delivery riders and 11.78 million delivery application users in our country.

Carrying such heavy packages for long hours, climbing staircases with their backpacks, and experiencing bogus buyers are just some of the problems that they encounter.

As we walk on the road, struggling with the flow of time and surviving each day, we often see different faces of reality. Faces in which the struggle of poverty and having no home to go to at the end of the day is visible, hoping for luck to come.

According to the article titled Poverty and Homelessness: Facts and Statistics in the Philippines, authored by Samantha Leal, there are approximately 4.5 million homeless people, including children, in the Philippines, which has a population of 106 million people.

As this issue remains in our country, may we learn to open our eyes, be grateful, and extend kindness to those faces on whom we see different kinds of battles. Every day is tiring, but if you look at it from another corner, it's guilt-inducing to give up because there are people who are more tired with enduring everything just to live than ourselves.

Improper garbage disposal, ineffective waste collection, and a shortage of disposal facilities are among the dominant concerns in the country’s solid waste management.

Despite efforts to promote proper waste segregation in the Philippines and enacted Republic Act No. 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act (ESWMA) of 2000, the nation still faces an ongoing challenge in managing its waste, with serious environmental and health risks.

In April 2023 Performance Audit Report, the Philippines' solid waste management program seemed to have not achieved its goal since its implementation.

Much like other cultures, the Philippines is known for the parentification of eldest siblings, serving as the main guide and second parents to their younger brothers and sisters. While this does not diminish the parents' roles in their children's upbringing, it is evident that older siblings play a bigger part in their youngsters' lives.

A foreign study by Mchale et al. (2012) supports this claim with their research findings, which stated that siblings are the building blocks of the family's structure and are key players in the lives of one another. The actual presence of an older brother or sister in a younger one's life makes the difference as to whether or not they will be guided towards a bright future.

This "You Matter To Me" Day, do not forget to say how much your ate's and kuya's matter to you. Give your utmost thanks and love to them for everything they have done and continue to do to make the family's life better.
