โUniversity for Humanityโ as they label this institution, but during the day when their fresh and sophomore students are supposed to breathe with ease after the hellish and sleepless week of midterm examinations, their conditions turned even worse as one of their most awaited days in the university did not only disappoint them, but also endangered their health.
October 2025 is referred to as the โflu seasonโ in the Philippines, yet the emergency rooms of Bicol University was not flooded with patients who have flu or cold but rather the victims of the release of gases of the smoke bombs during the BU Hataw 2025 that triggered or worsened their respiratory diseases.
Students were advised to pop the smoke bombs after the dance, but others did it at the start, leading to the field full of fumes that suffocated and caused eye irritation to multiple participants as they performed. However, despite not igniting the bombs at the beginning, the risk remains the same, or even potentially higher than the former, as the fumes become thicker and more catastrophic to those around the area. The unpredictable nature of smoke bombs also reduced visibility that made it more difficult for documentation and medical responders to navigate and accompany emergencies.
The Institute of Physical Education, Sports, and Recreation (IPESR) is the governing body behind this event, failing to be sufficiently aware that making students inhale colored smoke will never add excitement to the people. In fact, this act of carelessness and the lack of emergency personnel and anticipation that they admitted through the microphone even rubbed salt to the injury of BUeรฑos who attended the event despite their tired bodies and minds as they hoped for a night full of glamour and pride but received toxic chemicals instead.
These instances raise the concern of what questionable idea has pushed IPESR to approve the replacement of party poppers with the avidly more hazardous smoke bombs. Does the aesthetic value of smoke bomb outweigh its harms to the health and environment?
The inconvenience and danger posed to other BUeรฑos should not be shrugged off, treated like how a typical Monday event goes wrong, as those severely affected will continue to suffer.
