Mayon Volcano remains Alert Level 1
By Myra Valladolid

Mayon Volcano is still at alert level 1 of its abnormal condition according to Philippine Istitute of Volcanology and Seismology(PHILVOLCS) today at 8:00 am, January 8, 2016.

The Public is strongly advised by the PHILVOLCS to renounce from entering the 6-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) due to the some possible dangers.

During the past 24 hours of monitoring, Mayon Volcano is not detected of any volcanic earthquake. Weak to wispy emission of white steam plumes creeping down slope towards west-northwest was observed.

Active streams/river channels and those identified as perennially lahar-prone areas on all sectors of the volcano should also be avoided especially during extreme weather conditions when there is heavy and prolonged rainfall.

PHILVOLCS together with Department of Science and Technology or DOST continues to monitor the condition of the Volcano.

By Myra Valladolid and Jemerlyn Valladolid

More or less 124 students from different schools in Bicol region attended the Padunungan 2017 held at Bicol University Amphitheatre yesterday and today, January 6-7, 2017.

The event which was composed of lectures and competitions was themed "Padayon Kabataan: Filipino Youth as Responsible Media Used for Social Change."

It was conducted by the University of the Philippines (UP) Ibalon in partnership with GML Quality and Excellence and its Finest, and Review and Consultancy. It was participated by 10 different schools around Bicol, mostly coming from Sorsogon, Albay and Camarines Sur. Included are Aquinas University of Legazpi, Bicol Regional Science High School, Ligao National High School, Pilar National High School, Bicol University Integrated High School, Bulan National High School, Daraga National High School, Calabanga National High School, Legazpi Science High School and St. Louise de Marillac College of Sorsogon.

According to Danica Berano, head of UP Ibalon, "Its (Padurunugan) only vision is to help the community especially the university to become socially aware and to be politically educated and also an avenue to educate the youth."

Jul Toni Pura, Grade 9 student of St. Louis de Marillac College of Sorsogon, said that he enjoyed and learned a lot from the event.

"Na-enjoy ko yung event ngayon kasi sa ginawa nila, it’s a good thing para mag-inform at [maging] interactive ang lahat. Kaya super dami ko talagang natutunan, lalong-lalo na sa mga speakers where nag-share sila nang knowledge para makainform especially sa youth na katulad ko," Pura stated.

UP Ibalon is a socio-cultural organization of UP Diliman students from different provinces in the Bicol Peninsula.

FIRECRACKER ACCIDENTS DECREASE IN BICOL
By Jemerlyn Valladolid

Seventy-seven injuries caused by firecrackers were recorded in Bicol Region from December 21, 2015 to January 4, 2017.

The number of cases as compared to last year has decreased by 37 percent. Out of the six provinces in Bicol Region, Albay had the most number of firework or firecracker incidents while Catanduanes and Sorsogon have zero case.

As for the number of injuries, the province of Albay recorded 62 cases in 2015-2016 and only 44 in 2016-2017; while in Camarines Norte, cases are 10 down to four; Camarines Sur, 31 to seven; Catanduanes, two to zero; Masbate, 11 up to 22; and in Sorsogon, 7 down to zero. There is a total of 123 injuries for 2015-2016 while 77 in 2016-2017.

Most injuries were caused by Piccolo with 51 cases; Kwitis, 5; 5 Star with 5; Unknown, 6; Fountain, 2; Luces with 5; and 3 from Sparklers, with a total of 77.

According to the Department of Health, "Despite of the challenges we have for several years to make action and injury-deduction [methods, we still] have very minimal trade of injured client or patient, 77 for this year. But fortunately, itong 77 na ito is 37 percent lower than last year. Ang pinakaroot cause nito has been the attitude of the people lalong-lalo na tayong lahat. It passed from one generation to another generation, yung tradition ng pagpapaputok sa pagsalubong ng Christmas and New Year and we believe that it drives away the spirit and at the same time, it brings good fortune, na naaattract natin yung positive vibes or good vibes for the year."

DOH also added that they are consistent and persistent in campaign against the use of fireworks or firecrackers not just to children but also to the adults.
