The Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Negros Oriental has declared Ferdinand Dela Merced persona non grata following his controversial remarks that drew public outrage during Typhoon Tino’s onslaught.
In its regular session on November 10, Vice Governor Fritz Diaz approved the motion endorsed by Board Member Erwin Macias to declare Dela Merced persona non grata, after his social media comments were deemed disrespectful to the local government and residents of Negros Oriental.
Dela Merced, known as the “Philippine Looper,” had earlier posted that calamities are a yearly occurrence and criticized what he described as poor hospitality from local officials during his visit on November 1—remarks made while LGUs were mobilized for typhoon response.
Board Member Macias said Dela Merced’s comments unfairly tarnished the province’s image, noting that the traveler was even provided free accommodation at the Provincial Convention Center through the assistance of the provincial government.
The approved resolution stated that Dela Merced’s statements caused public indignation and were inconsistent with the values of respect, gratitude, and decency expected from visitors. It emphasized that the declaration aims to uphold the dignity and reputation of Negros Oriental and its people.
