Philippine national debt slightly down in April
The Philippines' total debt went down slightly to P18.47 trillion in April from P18.49 trillion in March, the Bureau of the Treasury announced on Weds, June 3.
The agency said the decrease was due to the government's payment of domestic debt.
“The decline was mainly due to the P121.64 billion net redemption for the month, as P283.24 billion in debt issuance was offset by maturities of P404.88 billion,” it said.
Meanwhile, foreign debt increased because of the weaker peso. The Treasury said, “Revaluation of foreign currency-denominated obligations amounted to P101.72 billion due to the weaker peso against the US dollar and third-currency movements.”
Domestic debt made up most of the country's total debt, accounting for 67.22 percent, while 32.78 percent are external loans.
