UN-fun facts about autistic elopement:

Studies show that roughly 50% of autistic children attempt to elope at least once after the age of 4.

Elopement is often an attempt to escape sensory overwhelm, avoid anxiety, seek something desired, or cope with distress.

Elopement is linked to a high risk of injury or death, particularly from drowning or traffic accidents.

Many children have patterns related to their elopement behavior. Understanding why they’re trying to leave can help prevent it.

While safety tools like door alarms and tracking devices can help, the best prevention comes from skill building; sensory accommodations, communication supports, emotional regulation strategies, and consistent routines.

Blaming parents or teachers when elopement happens is harmful. What we need is education, resources, and compassion.
