Every year on April 18, amateur radio operators around the globe take to the airwaves to commemorate ๐ช๐ผ๐ฟ๐น๐ฑ ๐๐บ๐ฎ๐๐ฒ๐๐ฟ ๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ผ ๐๐ฎ๐ (๐ช๐๐ฅ๐) a celebration of the rich legacy and enduring relevance of amateur radio. This date marks the founding of the
Early amateur radio pioneers were among the first to explore the potential of shortwave radio frequencies, discovering they could support global communication far from being the โwastelandโ many thought they were. With amateur radio at risk of being marginalized, representatives from 25 countries convened in Paris to form the IARU, united in their mission to defend and promote amateur radio worldwide.
Their advocacy bore fruit just two years later at the ๐๐ป๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ป๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป๐ฎ๐น ๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ผ๐๐ฒ๐น๐ฒ๐ด๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ฝ๐ต ๐๐ผ๐ป๐ณ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฒ,, where frequency bands still in use today ๐ญ๐ฒ๐ฌ, ๐ด๐ฌ, ๐ฐ๐ฌ, ๐ฎ๐ฌ, ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐ญ๐ฌ ๐บ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ were allocated for amateur use.
Since then, IARU has championed the cause of amateur radio, working with regulators worldwide to preserve and expand access to critical frequency bands. From its 25 original member-societies, the IARU has grown to represent
Region 1 โ Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Northern Asia
Region 2 โ The Americas
Region 3 โ Asia-Pacific, including Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific islands

As IARU celebrates its ๐ญ๐ฌ๐ฌ๐๐ต ๐ฎ๐ป๐ป๐ถ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ ๐ถ๐ป ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฑ, the theme ๐ฌ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐ต๐๐๐ ๐ช๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐จ๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐น๐๐
๐๐ ๐ช๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ & ๐ฐ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐โ looks both backward with pride and forward with vision. Itโs a time to honor the remarkable contributions of radio amateurs over the past century especially the landmark year 1924, when intercontinental amateur communications became routine and to reaffirm our commitment to innovation, community, and emergency response.
World Amateur Radio Day is a chance for IARU member-societies and radio amateurs everywhere to demonstrate our capabilities, engage the public, and celebrate the friendships and achievements that define our global community.
Letโs continue to build on a century of success as we enter a new era of communication and discovery!
