โ€œKagaya nga ng palagi nating sinasabi, we do not limit literary interpretation to its usual form. The process of understanding literary wonders goes beyond written forms.

Samantala, binigyang pagkilalala ni G. Acebuche ang paghahanda ng mga estudyante: โ€œBased on what you have performed, they are all pinaghandaan. I really commend everyone for their preparations, for their performances. I just hope that all of the preparations that youโ€™ve done, ngatanan na nahibaruan niyo kan Sirโ€ฆmadara niyo kahuman sine na semester and also kahuman sa pag-graduate niyo didi sa UEP.โ€

โ€œNaging struggle talaga namon is an time management kasi almost nagsasabay siya sa amon PahtFit liwat and an amon finals. So grabe, an amon preparation is one day la, ungod talaga siya na sayo la ka adlaw and an practice sayo la ka adlaw. To be honest, sa amon practice dire siya kaganon an iyo naimod kanina. So I am very happy na an amo section napull-off adto tanan,โ€ saad niya.

So, proud ako sa naging performance namin. I think it is one of our better performances compared [to] last yearโ€™s Lantawan,โ€ pagbabahagi ni Kathleen Nacpil.

The PASUC-8 Regional Culture and Arts Festival (RCAF) 2025 concluded on December 12 in Palompon, Leyte, after a four-day run hosted by the Palompon Institute of Technology (PIT).

Closing and awarding ceremonies marked the conclusion of the festival, where Leyte Normal University (LNU) secured the overall championship for the second consecutive year.

Carrying the theme โ€œDuyog han Kultura: Pagsaulog sa Panaghiusaโ€ (Harmony of Culture: A Celebration of Unity), the event gathered 10 State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) across Eastern Visayas to compete in Music, Dance, Visual Arts, Theater Arts, and Pageantry categories.

In an interview, Nick Lusantas, a theater performer and Vice President of the University Performing Arts Organization (UPAO), shared his reflections on the festival. Lusantas is a fourth-year Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT) student from the University of Eastern Philippines (UEP) Main Campus.

When asked whether the theme of unity and culture was reflected throughout the festival, Lusantas raised concerns based on the experiences of UEP delegates.

He pointed to specific instances that, in his view, demonstrated unequal treatment toward UEP delegates, particularly during the opening parade. While other SUCs appeared in coordinated uniforms and jackets similar to athletic jerseys, UEP delegates wore plain white T-shirts, a piece of cloth as a neckerchief, black slippers, and carried pieces of bamboo as their cultural attire.

โ€œActually na[lainan] ak kay mali kawawa kit, although bagaw [na] cultural attire [a required] tas pag-abot didto may nagpaka-jacket,โ€ Lusantas shared.

He explained that he had initially commissioned a design for their jacket which some members had already paid for. However, the plan was later scrapped after the UEP cultural director clarified that cultural attire was required for the parade, following the agreement made during the meeting of cultural directors across Eastern Visayas.

According to him, this guideline was also consistent with the standards followed in the National PASUC.

โ€œThatโ€™s why pag abot namon didi na-shock ak na kami la an naka-cultural attire [tapos] an iba nagpaka-SCUAA attire.

UEP placed 9th out of the 10 participating SUCs in the overall standings, finishing second-to-last. In the previous PASUC in 2023, UEP ranked third overall.

As a senior member of UPAO, Lusantas reflected on the overall PASUC-8 RCAF experience and UEP's performance on behalf of the organization and the other delegates.

Wara man saam ginhatag na [demand] sa performance na gin-decline [namo], puro โ€˜ooโ€™ bisan pa iton kulang na oras [ngan] a panahon nagpipiraw na kami, naaagahan pa practice tas kinabukasan may klase [kaya] kunta maimod an effort sa kada performer,โ€ he voiced.

Lusantas also pointed out the lack of a permanent and secure space for student-artists to practice. Thus, he hopes that the new Office of Student Affairs (OSA) building will be opened before the year ends, as performers rely heavily on having a consistent venue for rehearsals.

Wara kami sarili na place [para] maging comfort place man la namon kay dati may man kami office kaya [dati] bisan pa kami magpaaga okay la kay safe man," he shared.

When asked about the issues that need to be addressed for UEP to compete on par with other SUCs, and his hopes as a student-artist, Lusantas emphasized: โ€œAko natuod man ak na a UPAO magkusog a buot pero nawawaraan siya essence kay kulang suporta. โ€

While acknowledging that the administration follows existing rules and policies, he also said that recognizing the efforts and providing stronger institutional support for student-artists could further bring out their capabilities and strengthen UEPโ€™s performance in future competitions.

Which is iton lat an ak paninindigan na siguro ko [hasta] mag arog man ak diri ko talaga iton malilimtan," Lusantas expressed.

December 11, 2025 โ€” University of Eastern Philippines (UEP) five-piece ensemble kept the disco groove alive in their 12-minute musical presentation during the Live Band competition at the Palompon Civic Center (PCC), held at 8 p.m. as the closing contest of the PASUC-8 RCAF 2025.

Composing the university's five-man delegate are Ahron Mercader on drums, Venz Medenilla on keys, Van Albino on lead, Vianca Gomba on vocals, and UEP Live Band coordinator Keith Tepace on bass

All seven bands were instructed to play within a 12-minute time frame consisting of three phases: final setup, one OPM song for warm-up, and one chosen OPM disco song for their contest piece.

Before the presentations, the contenders were given 10 minutes each for their sound check and familiarization with the venue. The inspection ran for more than an hour from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. due to technical difficulties.

One of UEPโ€™s coaches reported discriminatory treatment during soundcheck, claiming that assistance was unevenly provided.

โ€œSan nag-sound check an NWSSU and UEP, may babaye na sound checker naka-orange. Wara cya san NWSSU and UEP an nag-sound check. San mga taga Leyte na, gin-uupay niya an sound,โ€ she protested.

Tepace also observed the same inconsistency: โ€œConcern namo kaninaโ€ฆ san pag-soundcheck namo a first performers up to [third], ginpanginano sira san operators san mga amps. Tapos pag-abot sa pan-upat [NWSSU] ngan sa amo, warayโ€”ginpabay-an la kami.โ€

Albino echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that UEP received no technical assistance at all.

โ€œSa ngatanan na seven performers, an diri la ginpanginano san operator an UEP. Napansin ko kanina habang nakadto kami sa backstage,โ€ he claimed.

He added that other groups received immediate help when their sound malfunctioned.

โ€œHalimbawa, nag-sound check kanina a performer no. 1, nagkakayaon pagraot sa sound di ba ginbubuligan nira para mapatunog sin maupayโ€ฆhalimbawa may mga grounded, ginduduok nira dayon tapos gintitimplahan. Sayo la talaga an dumuok sa amon san final na, an sayo na lalaki,โ€ Albino testified.

Following all live performances, UEP was the only participating university not called for the awarding of its certificate of participation. The omission was corrected only after UEP participants from the audience raised the concern with facilitators.

Even before the competition began, UEPโ€™s delegates faced setbacks. Their lineup underwent last-minute changes due to unexpected disqualifications.

โ€œMala na-behind an amon tugtugan kaysa sa ira. Kami kasiโ€”pito kami na live band, na-DQ amon main drummer tsaka an amon saxophonist. Tapos an nahinabo, nagbalyu-balyu-ay kami kapot na instrument. Ako nagin drums ak [from bass],โ€ Mercader explained.

He added that the group had limited time to adjust: โ€œNag-adjust talaga kami siton na time. Sayang talagaโ€ฆ makuri talaga amon practice siton. An am preparation haliputay la.โ€

LNU nakalaban lat namo dati, as in makusog talaga sira,โ€ reflected Gomba, noting that their competitors were tough.

December 11, 2025โ€” Six pair performances from various State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) took the stage in the Contemporary Duo competition under the Dance Category at 3:30 p.m. at the Palompon Civic Center (PCC), following the group category earlier in the day.

Representing the University of Eastern Philippines (UEP) were Darlyn Joy M. Olinan, a first-year BSEd English student from UEP- Pedro Rebadulla Memorial Campus (PRMC), and Mark Sebastian F. Pajuelas, a second-year BPEd student from the main campus.

Competitors were allotted two to three minutes to perform this yearโ€™s theme for the Contemporary Duo category: "Neo-Ethnic: Malakas at Maganda Storyline."

In an interview, the pair reflected on their performance, sharing that their efforts had paid off despite hiccups in their preparation.

"Diri talaga enough [ang time] for us kay an akon padis, si Mark [from UEP] main campus, tas ako man [from] branch ak sa Catubig. Nag-mi-meet la kami [sa] weekends la kay di man siya nakakauli dayon [sa Catubig],โ€ Olinan shared, citing time constraints and distance as factors affecting their practice.

Meanwhile, Pajuelas also shared the same sentiments, admiring a mix of disappointment and relief, but remained positive about their experience and hopes to compete again.

Kun kami ta an idadayo next-next year, at least mayaon na kami knowledge kun paano siya daraon,โ€ Pajuelas said.

The duo also shared that they had known each other since 2023, and this familiarity provided comfort which helped ease the pressure in competing.

"Maiha na [kasi] kami magkila since 2023 kay sa Ibabao [festival] so, mas naging komportable na kami sa kada tagsa," Olinan shared.

This yearโ€™s PASUC-8 RCAF marks their third time dancing together as a duo.

โ€œHopefully, next RCAF, mapili ta kami na magrepresent san university kay karuyag ko lat maipakita an improvement gihapon,โ€ she added.

Olinan also expressed her hopes of representing UEP again, believing that their perseverance might inspire fellow students, affirming: "Karuyag ko maimod na an UEP diri la sugad sini, parang makakasabay-sabay sira sa mga big universities, especially nga an UEP darako an population.

The University of Eastern Philippines (UEP) Dance Company contested against nine delegations from various State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) across the region in the Hip-hop Dance Competition of the PASUC-8 Regional Culture and Arts Festival (RCAF), held at the Palompon Civic Center on December 11, 2025.

Following the theme "VIRAL: Moving with the Algorithm," participating groups were tasked to deliver a performance with a time requirement of at least three and no more than five minutes.

The nine-member team represented UEP under the leadership of University Performing Arts Organization (UPAO) 'Supremo' Roen Jayrol Limpiado, a fourth-year AB Political Science student.

"We only had two weeks to prepare for the competition," Limpiado shared in an interview. "Dire man dako an am [time for] preparation, may medyo kampot kay may mga events lat sa university na kailangan ig-attend to [like] mga requests outside, [however] enough naman siya para makadayo or makagawa ng piyesa namin na kayang ilaban dito."

He explained that their team initially expected a full month of training, but a series of university requests and performance duties significantly reduced their preparation period.

"Kailangan mo i-anticipate na [mga difficulties] sa mga beginners [and] the pressure is heavy talaga [as senior]," he added, acknowledging the responsibility of mentoring a mostly new set of dancers.

Limpiado also reflected on the contrast between this year and their PASUC 2023 performance, where they placed second. Befoe, the team was composed of seasoned members with established dynamics.

This year, most of their dancers were first-time competitors in both hip-hop and regional-level contests. Their group competed in the hip-hop category, believing it to be the most practical and manageable genre for their new lineup.

The team faced confusion regarding their music selection during the event. Unlike other competing SUCs, UEPโ€™s contingent was not aware of the updated guidelines, which affected the alignment of their final routine.

December 11, 2025 โ€” At the Pandalawahang Pag-Arte competition held at 3:30 p.m. at the PIT Balay Alumni, UEPโ€™s duo representatives staged their original piece titled 'High Blood Control', written and composed by AB Literature (ABLit) third-year student Noe Balanquit.

"Insipired [ang story] kay Discaya [pati] ito mga ginmention ko na names mga construction [firms nila]," Balanquit said, explaining the satire behind the story, which references the Flood Control controversy.

He shared how the title came to him: "So naisip ko, nag-ra-rhyme [kaya] high blood control since [pag] a mga tawo mahilig sa mga pagkaon na ma-cholesterol [mao] na-ha-high blood sira. Nag-ma-match siya [so] mao nala ak gin-conceptualize na suraton."

Balanquit performed the piece with his partner, Eva Pinca, a third-year BS Environmental Science student.

Coming fresh from their earlier Short and Sweet Play performance, Pinca described the pressure and excitement of performing as a duo: "Grabe nakaka-overwhelm. One day practice la [kami] pag-abot namo didi sa Palompon naka-practice."

During their performance, the duo faced a technical error when the timer started earlier before the sound system was ready.

"Nagbanโ€™o kasi a host didto [ngan] nag-start na a time[r] so ginbalewala ko nala. Nauna talaga a timer [pero] gin-enjoy nala namo [pag-perform]," Pinca said.

Northwest Samar State University (NWSSU) emerged as the champion, followed by Leyte Normal University (LNU) in second place and Eastern Samar State University (ESSU) in third.

The University of Eastern Philippines (UEP) secured fourth place, while Palompon Institute of Technology (PIT) finished in fifth.

December 11, 2025 โ€” The Musical category in Short and Sweet Play competition showcased original theatrical and musical performances on the second day of the PASUC-8 Regional Culture and Arts Festival (RCAF) 2025 at the Palompon Institute of Technology (PIT) Balay Alumni.

Representing the University of Eastern Philippines (UEP), the University Performing Arts Organization (UPAO) Karasikas Theater Ensemble performed an original musical play centered on modern Philippine politics, touching on corruption, patronage politics, and political dynasties.

Entitled "Huwag lang si Junior", the production was directed by their coach Dr. Mark Jeoffrey Diaz, co-directed by Nick Lusantas, with an original musical composition by Aliph Jancee De Asis.

As in napaimod namon a message sa audience, dako na iton saam," reflected Lusantas, a BS Information Technology fourth-year student, on their performance and podium finish.

As for the musical piece, De Asis explained that the composition was crafted to portray the "blindness" of many Filipinos to ongoing societal issues, represented by the character Ineng.

"[The] song is about kun gaโ€™no ka-blind a sayo na tawo. Na-ma-manipulate kit through sweet promises kaya a progression niya slow tapos yaon tigda upbeats," he shared.

Their preparation spanned roughly six months for the musical pieces, with the staging finalized only about a week before they traveled to Palompon.

"Actually very unexpected uraura [a results] kay kun mababati tah kanra mga kanta compared sa akon ginhimo is [iba]. Kanra kasi yaon sira recording talaga," De Asis reflected, noting the challenges behind their composition process.

De Asis further shared how much he relied on personal resourcefulness and basic tools in producing the music, saying: "An akon la gamit is sayo na cellphone, sayo na app, tapos headphones, tas sayo na gitara and [an] other instruments like piano sa cellphone ko la."

Reflecting on the experience and the results, he added that their vocal training and recording quality are areas they hope to improve moving forward.

He expressed hope for better resources for student-artists in the university.

Samar State University (SSU) emerged as first placer, followed by Leyte Normal University (LNU) in second, while UEP secured third place in the Musical Category of the Short and Sweet Play competition.
