My recent post about Dumaguete being ranked the safest city to travel to in the Philippines received a mix of reactions.
Many felt proud and happy, while others expressed doubt — and I understand both sides.
Yes, like any other place, Dumaguete still experiences minor crimes. But based on the data, the city scored 81.36%, placing it ahead of Davao at 80.73%. That says a lot, considering the comparison is nationwide.
To me, this recognition means something. It’s a reminder that despite the challenges, Dumaguete continues to embody its reputation as “The City of Gentle People.”
And that’s something we can all be proud of. 🧡
Here are several key points that may explain why Dumaguete was ranked as the safest city to travel to in the Philippines.
🛡️ 1. Low Crime Rate Relative to Population Size
While minor incidents occur, violent crimes are relatively rare in Dumaguete. Its overall crime volume remains low compared to larger, more urbanized cities.
⸻
👮 2. Strong Community Presence and Police Visibility
Local authorities and barangay tanods (community watch) are often visible in neighborhoods. This helps create a sense of safety and encourages quick response to incidents.
⸻
🤝 3. Friendly and Approachable Locals
Dumaguete isn’t called “The City of Gentle People” for nothing. The warm, welcoming culture of its residents helps reduce social tension and makes it easier for locals and tourists to feel secure.
⸻
📚 4. University Town Vibe
Home to Silliman University and other institutions, the city has a youthful, educated population and an environment that promotes peaceful coexistence among diverse groups.
⸻
🌿 5. Laidback Lifestyle & Smaller Urban Footprint
Unlike mega-cities like Manila or Cebu, Dumaguete is more relaxed and less congested. This naturally reduces the likelihood of large-scale criminal activity and fosters a slower, more mindful pace of life.
⸻
📊 6. Safety Ranking Based on Verified Traveler Data
The 2025 ranking likely comes from surveys or data platforms that analyze safety based on traveler experiences, police records, and peace-and-order indicators. Dumaguete’s 81.36% safety score reflects overall traveler confidence and general livability.
⸻
🧭 7. Popular with Foreign Retirees & Solo Travelers
Dumaguete is a known destination for foreign retirees, digital nomads, and solo backpackers — groups that typically value safety, walkability, and friendly locals.
