Magpies Press

Magpies Press 🐦 an artist collective that explores indie publishing, performed poetry, visual media, & others

Magpies is an artist collective and small press dedicated to collaborative practices in independent zine production. Established in 2013 initially as a poetry workshop and independent publishing collective, Magpies has now turned to more transdisciplinal projects that take off from DIY publishing. We work on DIY publishing as an artistic-activist organizing production that conditions new possibili

ties of textuality and creative relations. We run initiatives for community exchange, such as ZINE ORGY (since 2015), a biannual artist expo, THE BASEMENT(since 2018), a platform for critical conversations on culture, and DEEP THOUGHT (since 2016), fora on works in progress.

This year, dadalo bilang Guest of Honor ang Pilipinas sa Frankfurt Book Fair sa Germany. Kami at ang aming friends from small independent presses, komiks, writers, and zine community, urge you and everyone else to BOYCOTT THE FRANKFURT BOOK FAIR.‼️ Period no erase fax no printer cross our hearts and hope to die! 🙅‍♀️🫀

“You don’t negotiate with a victim of genocide. You do what they’re asking to support them.”
Komikeros for Palestine reminded us of our collective responsibility to Palestinians to HEED THEIR CALL to boycott the book fair and all institutions that support Zionism. We have a responsibility to each other to prevent Germany and cultural institutions, both local and foreign, from further using our labor, our art, and our taxes to perfume their reputation—dahil hindi lang sila complicit, active collaborator din sila sa genocide ng Israel sa Palestine. If you refuse to see and acknowledge this, and fail to act on it, you are enabling this too.

This is not an opportunity to network!
This is our opportunity to show our solidarity!

END THE GENOCIDE!

Boykot Frankfurt Book Fair! End the genocide! Free Palestine!

Boykot Frankfurt Book Fair! End the genocide! Free Palestine!

BAKIT BOYKOT? A conversation and zine-sharing and trading on Palestine and the Frankfurt Book Fair

June 14, 2025 / 2PM to 5PM at Common Room, the Atrium, Makati

In October 2023, the Frankfurt Book Fair expressly stated that it “stands with complete solidarity on the side of Israel,” a position made even clearer by the Fair’s cancellation of the awarding ceremony for Palestinian author Adania Shibli. In January 2025, a call to boycott the FBF was launched by the international network Publishers for Palestine, after the FBF’s repeated refusal to condemn Israel’s genocide of Palestinians, cut ties with institutions and corporations that support the brutal Israeli occupation, and spotlight Palestine in FBF programming. After a decade-long campaign, the Philippines is slated to be FBF Guest of Honour in October 2025. Why should we join the boycott? Are there ways for us to compel the FBF to fulfill the boycott’s demands without actually joining the boycott? What is there to gain from a GoH stint now visibly entangled in FBF’s firm and willful complicity in the relentless extermination of Palestine? What is there to lose in maintaining separation between FBF participation and solidarity with the Palestinian struggle?

Walk-ins are welcome, although seating is limited!

📢 RE-CALL FOR ZINE CONTRIBUTIONS

If you are interested in contributing your zines to the library, send us an eMail at belatx(at)gmail(dot)com.

BOYKOT FRANKFURT BOOK FAIR! FREE PALESTINE!

RE-CALL FOR ZINE CONTRIBUTIONS

We have been slowly building a zine library on Palestine with zines made freely available by international organisations like Publishers For Palestine and Librarians & Archivists With Palestine. We hope to add more from Filipino zinesters, so we are looking for more zines and other print materials like komix, posters, flyers, bookmarks, stickers, et al, made by you and your friends to add to the collection.

One of the zines that will be available for reading and trading on June 14 is Palestinian author Adania Shibli’s story “This Sea is Mohammad al-Khatib’s,” published by Paper Trail Projects with illustrations by Apol Sta Maria. We are humbled, honoured, and eternally grateful that Ms Shibli has granted us permission to print a limited number of copies of her work for inclusion in the zine library.

The zine library is free to read and also open for trades, so if you want to trade your own zines on Palestine with other available zines in the library (as long as there are multiple copies of it), we can do that instead.

We plan to have the library with us in all the expos and fora and other in-person events we will organise in the future, the first of which is this coming June 14’s discussion on Palestine and the Frankfurt Book Fair Boycott campaign in the Common Room at Atrium, Makati.

If you are interested in contributing your zines to the library, send us an eMail at belatx(at)gmail(dot)com.

As part of UP Tacloban College's celebration of National Literature Month 📖✨, we were invited by the Division of Humanities to hold an introductory lecture and facilitate a workshop on zine-making ✂️🖍️ last April 2. We got to talk about and share with students what we hold dear: DIY production and care and collective work. 🤝

From the history and definition of zines 📚 to how they have evolved into DIY practices and communities, we shared how these have been adapted over time to build and sustain systems of making in the hands of hobbyists, enthusiasts, and nonprofessionals. We also touched on the values, politics, and dynamics at play in organizing conversations and alternative initiatives on creative production. 🛠🔄

Zines from our archive and those shared by friends were also passed around during the lecture. Participants browsed different manifestations of the medium in terms of form, theme, and process.

By the end of the workshop, there were zines on various issues and experiences of women—from Catholic and conservative suppression to mainstream representations of women’s bodies—and zines critical of “official” state representations of Tacloban and its local dynastic politics, just to name a few!

We are grateful to UP Tacloban’s Humanities professors—especially Prof. Jessa Amarille and Pauline Arnould—and their students who participated in the workshop for trusting us with their space and stories, and for looking after us. 🫂❤️‍🔥

RIP DADDY 🙏☠️😥

presents: TOUGH TWELVE 🕯️⚰️🪦 The Daddy Digong Zine 🕯️⚰️🪦
For Magpies’ 12th year, we present twelve most iconic Magpies thingzzz 🐦‍⬛

Para sa alaala ng yumao nating ama you will always be famous

Released in 2017, the Daddy Digong zine is a handmade photo album of our members’ childhood photos superimposed with Rodrigo Duterte’s face. Behind every photograph is a handwritten anecdote of memories with their fictional father meant to allude to current state crises.

Each photograph is photoshopped, printed on photo paper and glued together with matte paper printed with camera watermark and handwritten text to simulate an old photograph. The plastic pages of the photo album were also made by hand. Each film of plastic burned over candle flame to seal the edges. The album pages were then compiled by two metal fasteners. Because of its handmade nature, we released very very limited copies of this zine.

CNN Philippines featured it as one of the “best Filipino books of 2017” and again as one of Adam David’s 2018 summer reading list.

The second edition of the Daddy Digong zine is an even smaller photo album made out of an album keychain. Each photograph was resized to around 4x6” and painstakingly cut one by one.
It was released in 2022.
