𝐉𝐔𝐒𝐓 𝐈𝐍 | SHC’s Taba Wins Provincial Dagliang Talumpati Contest

LUCENA CITY, QUEZON β€” Dawn Lujille M. Taba, a third-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing student of Sacred Heart College of Lucena City, Inc. (SHC), was declared the champion in the Provincial Dagliang Talumpati Contest on August 19 at the Quezon Convention Center, emerging as the top speaker among three finalists in the competition held as part of the annual Niyugyugan Festival.

Taba emerged as the provincial champion after advancing to the final round of the competition, where three finalists representing Alabat, General Luna, and Lucena City competed for the title.

The competition began with the provincial elimination on August 12, conducted virtually via Zoom, with 11 college students from various higher education institutions across Quezon participating in the extemporaneous public speaking competition.

Taba secured a spot among the Top 3 finalists following the elimination round, advancing to the provincial finals after demonstrating her ability to deliver an impromptu speech and articulate her ideas effectively under time pressure.

During the final round, Taba competed against the representatives from Alabat and General Luna before being named the competition’s champion.

She was trained and coached by Eduard Mancilla, Director for Student Development, in preparation for the demanding speaking competition.

Reflecting on her victory, Taba shared that she felt grateful for the support she received and proud to once again share her talent in public speaking.

β€œWhat matters most is resonanceβ€”the impact I leave behind with every opportunity to speak.”

For her preparation, Taba focused on both the mental and technical aspects of extemporaneous speaking, studying materials on the legacy of Manuel Luis Quezon y Molina and the current state of Quezon Province.

β€œMr. Mancilla truly believed in me, trusting the way I organized my thoughts using my own methods and techniques,” Taba said, emphasizing the confidence her coach instilled in her throughout the preparation.

Taba’s victory showcases her public speaking skills and ability to think critically, respond confidently, and communicate effectively under pressure, reflecting SHC Lucena’s commitment to holistic student development and meaningful participation in provincial activities.

The Provincial Dagliang Talumpati Contest is one of the featured activities of the annual Niyugyugan Festival, a provincial celebration that highlights the culture, heritage, talents, and accomplishments of Quezon.

π’ππ„π‚πˆπ€π‹ | β€œI would rather have a government run like hell by Filipinos than a government run like heaven by Americans."

There is something unsettling about a sentence like this.

taking on a stance that does not romanticize nationhood, not promising that freedom will be perfect, nor that a country built by its own people will always get it right.

Instead, it places something far more difficult in our hands: the right and responsibility to shape our own country.

For Manuel L. Quezon, independence was never simply about removing one flag and raising another. It was about people learning to speak for themselves, govern themselves, and eventually determine for themselves what kind of nation they wished to become.

Quezon Day is, in many ways, a remembrance of a man. But perhaps it is also a remembrance of an idea: that a nation is not merely defined by the land it occupies, but by the people who choose to give it a voice, an identity, and a future.

History, however, has a peculiar way of turning people into monuments.

It preserves their names, places their portraits in classrooms, and condenses their lives into dates and accomplishments. Eventually, the person becomes a figure in a textbook, and the words become something we quote without necessarily stopping to consider what they ask of us.

And perhaps Quezon's words are worth returning to precisely because they were never really about choosing between heaven and hell. They were about choosing ownership.

To govern imperfectly as Filipinos is to accept that the work of nationhood belongs to us.

And that inheritance is not a comfortable one.

The Philippines we have today was once only a vision in the minds of those who came before us. Like every inheritance, it does not end with receiving it. It asks to be understood. Questioned. Protected. And, when necessary, reimagined.

A legacy, after all, is not something we preserve untouched.

It is something we prove worthy of carrying.

So perhaps Quezon Day is not only an occasion to remember the man whose name we know. It is an invitation to confront the country his generation dreamed ofβ€”and the country ours is still becoming.

Because the story of a nation does not end when its heroes become history.
It continues in the hands of those who remain.

And perhaps the greatest way to honor the people who imagined this country before us is to ask, with equal courage: What will we do with the country they left in our hands?

For the nation they imagined, and the nation we continue to write.

𝐉𝐔𝐒𝐓 𝐈𝐍 | Institutional Representatives Participate in AsiaPLAT x NPTC 2026 Joint Congress on Psychology Education

On August 6–8, 2026, Mr. Jan-Almer L. Panganiban, Research Assistant from the Research, Innovation and Quality Assurance Office, and Ms. Maria Carmela Adrianna R. Alegre, Psychometrician from the Admission and Guidance Services Offices, both faculty members of the College of Psychology, participated in the AsiaPLAT x NPTC 2026: Joint Asia Psychology Learning and Teaching Congress.

The three-day academic conference was organized by the Teaching Psychology Special Interest Group (TPSIG) of the Psychological Association of the Philippines, together with the AsiaPLAT Consortium, in collaboration with the University of Santo Tomas Department of Psychology. It carried the theme, β€œReimagining Psychology Education: Global Perspectives, Decolonization and Indigenization in Teaching and Learning,” which sought to foster meaningful dialogue on the future of psychology education across diverse cultural and social contexts.

Representing the institution, Mr. Panganiban and Ms. Alegre presented their research paper entitled, β€œBasic Personality Inventory and College Adjustment Scales: Examining Latent Structures and Structural Associations in a Filipino College Sample.” Their presentation provided an avenue to share the institution’s research initiatives and contribute to scholarly discussions on psychology education, particularly in promoting culturally responsive and context-sensitive approaches to teaching and learning.

The participation of the two faculty members also supports the institution’s commitment to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education, particularly Target 4.7, which emphasizes education that promotes sustainable development, global citizenship, cultural diversity, and appreciation of diverse cultures. The conference’s emphasis on global perspectives, decolonization, and indigenization in psychology education provided a meaningful platform for advancing these principles within the field.

Moreover, their participation highlighted the institution’s commitment to strengthening research engagement, professional development, and international academic collaboration. By presenting research in an international forum, Mr. Panganiban and Ms. Alegre contributed to the exchange of knowledge and perspectives that enrich psychology education and promote greater recognition of culturally grounded research.

Through their involvement in AsiaPLAT x NPTC 2026, the College of Psychology demonstrated its continuing dedication to research excellence, quality education, cultural responsiveness, and meaningful participation in the global academic communityβ€”further advancing the institution’s contribution to SDG 4: Quality Education.
