I had a moment during Zeus’ guitar class that made me pause and rethink how I show up for him when things start getting difficult.
I used to think that when kids start losing motivation, I just needed to encourage more.
More reminders.
More cheering.
More “you can do it.”
But lately, I noticed something with Zeus during guitar class.
The more the lessons started feeling harder for him, the more he quietly pulled away. And as a mom, it’s a hard thing to watch—not because he’s not capable, but because you can see when something starts to feel heavy for them inside.
At first, I did what I always knew to do.
“Come on, you love this.”
“Just try again.”
“You can do hard things.”
But it didn’t feel like it was helping anymore.
So in the next session, I tried something different. I didn’t sit back and watch. I sat beside him and learned with him.
And honestly, it didn’t fix everything instantly. But it changed something in the moment—we were in it together.
It reminded me that I’m not always going to get it right as a mom. I’m still figuring it out. But I can keep trying to understand my child better instead of just pushing harder.
Because sometimes kids don’t need a better version of us.
They need us to stay close while they figure it out.
And maybe the real work of parenting is learning to notice when to push… and when to simply stay ✨
