The Luzon Datum of 1911 is the primary geodetic reference system used in the Philippines. It was established during the American colonial period and is used as the reference point for all land surveys in the country.

Luzon Datum and Marinduque

Geodetic Center: The Luzon Datum of 1911's central reference point (origin) is located at Station Balanacan in Mogpog, Marinduque.

Station Balanacan serves as the "zero" point or origin for all geodetic surveys across the Philippines. All geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) and elevations in the Philippine geodetic network are referenced relative to this point.

The choice of Marinduque, particularly the Balanacan area, is due to its relatively central location in the archipelago, making it ideal for national triangulation.

Importance

The Luzon Datum is the basis for mapping, land registration, and infrastructure development in the Philippines.

It is gradually being replaced or transformed in some applications by the PRS92 (Philippine Reference System of 1992) and more recently WGS84, especially in GPS and satellite systems, but it still plays a fundamental role in official land surveys.
