This Bone-Repair Material Isn't Made in a Lab — It's Sheared Off a Sheep.

For decades, collagen has been the go-to material in regenerative medicine and dentistry — a protective scaffold that shields healing bone from being disrupted by surrounding soft tissue while new growth fills in. Researchers at King's College London wanted to know if something considered agricultural waste could do the job just as well, or better: keratin, the structural protein that makes up wool.

The team, led by Dr. Sherif Elsharkawy, first extracted keratin from wool and chemically processed it into stable, durable membranes. They tested it on human bone cells in the lab first — the cells grew successfully and showed strong signs of healthy bone development. "We are really excited to show for the first time how a wool-based material has been successfully tested in a living animal to repair bones," Elsharkawy said, calling it "a major milestone" that positions keratin as a genuine new class of regenerative material, not just a cheaper substitute.

The sustainability angle matters too: wool is a renewable resource, often simply discarded as waste by the farming industry today. To be clear about where this actually stands — this is still animal-testing stage research, not something ready for human patients. Your Gut Bacteria Might Be Eating YOU

The colon has a protective mucus lining standing between trillions of gut bacteria and your actual intestinal wall — made mostly of a sugar-rich protein called mucin, which happens to be edible to the bacteria living there. Normally, they don't touch it. They'd rather eat the fiber coming through your diet. But fiber isn't unlimited, and when it runs out, some gut bacteria species switch their diet entirely and start consuming the mucus barrier itself.

Researchers proved this directly using specially raised mice, born with completely sterile guts, then given a controlled transplant of 14 known human gut bacteria species so scientists could track exactly which ones were doing what. On a fiber-free diet, several of those species pivoted to breaking down and eroding the protective mucus layer — thinning it to the point where dangerous invading bacteria could infect the exposed colon wall underneath.

Here's the twist from a newer 2026 follow-up study: fiber isn't the only thing that keeps this behavior in check. Researchers at Princeton and the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research found that certain indigestible plant proteins — a category of nutrition largely ignored until now — can *also* redirect gut bacteria away from the mucus lining, while simultaneously boosting production of beneficial metabolites tied to better gut health and healthier body weight. A Worm With No Digestive System Just Rewrote What We Know About Plastic.

Long before biodegradable plastic became a modern buzzword, bacteria and archaea had already invented their own version. Many microbes produce natural compounds called PHAs (polyhydroxyalkanoates), storing them inside their own cells as reserves of carbon and energy — the exact same class of material humans now manufacture industrially and sell as eco-friendly plastic, used in food packaging, dissolvable sutures, and drug delivery systems.

For years, scientists assumed only microorganisms themselves could break PHAs back down. That assumption cracked open thanks to an oddly specific little animal: a two-centimeter, gutless marine worm called *Olavius algarvensis*. This worm has no digestive system and no excretory system at all — it survives entirely by hosting a dense layer of bacterial symbionts under its skin, which is what gives it its ghostly white color. Researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology in Bremen, Germany, studying how this strange worm processes waste from its bacterial partners, found something unexpected: it had the enzymes to digest PHA directly.

That single observation opened up a much bigger question — so they checked further. The result, published August 13 in *Nature Ecology & Evolution*: animals across nine completely different phyla — marine worms, starfish, earthworms, and various terrestrial species — all carry enzymes capable of breaking PHAs down. If true across ecosystems, it means carbon stored inside microbes has likely been quietly flowing directly into animal food webs in a way scientists never accounted for, for hundreds of millions of years. The researchers are careful to note they don't yet know how significant this pathway actually is in the wild — but the capability itself, once thought exclusive to microbes, turns out to be everywhere.

A coral reef off West Africa was written off as dead in the 1960s. One scientist spent a year proving otherwise.

In the 1960s, government fishing surveyors off Benin's coast hauled up chunks of coral in their nets, more than 50 meters down. Assuming the depths were too dark and inhospitable to support live coral, they buried the finding in a single paragraph of a 130-page report and moved on. No one went back to check for over 60 years.

Then, in 2021, Gérard Zinzindohoué — an oceanographer at the Benin Fisheries and Oceanological Research Institute — saw living coral in person for the first time, in Cape Verde, and asked himself a simple question: did Benin have reefs of its own? A colleague eventually handed him the old 1960s report. He realized how little anyone actually knew about his own country's coastline.

Getting back out there wasn't easy. The team couldn't even buy sonar equipment from their European supplier, and Benin doesn't own a research vessel — so they had to rely on ordinary fishing boats to travel 14 miles offshore, further than those boats were ever meant to go. "The fishermen's boats are not used to going that far offshore, so it was risky for everyone," Zinzindohoué said.

Between April and December 2025, they mapped a 4.3-mile stretch of seafloor using sonar, underwater drones, and stationary cameras. When footage finally came back from around 177 feet down, it showed something no one expected: six types of soft coral, two black corals, and eight fish species — a full, living ecosystem, hiding in the "twilight zone" where just enough sunlight reaches to sustain it, known scientifically as a mesophotic coral ecosystem. "I was guided by the hope that sometimes nature can surprise us," Zinzindohoué said. "It surprised me as well."

On the night of March 22–23, 2026, four masked thieves drove a tractor through the gate of the Magnani-Rocca Foundation, a private museum in the countryside near Parma, Italy. A 2,300-year-old scrap of papyrus contains three lines from "The Odyssey" that don't exist in any modern version of the story.

This summer, as Christopher Nolan's blockbuster adaptation of *The Odyssey* pulled Homer's epic back into pop culture, the Metropolitan Museum of Art quietly put something far older back on display: a papyrus fragment, just 7.5 inches long, that is the earliest known written copy of the poem in existence. Dated to roughly 285–250 BCE, it was written in Ptolemaic Egypt using ink made from lampblack soot and water, applied with a stylus onto paper made from reeds — discovered near El-Hibeh, Egypt in 1902, and part of the Met's collection since 1909.

Norway's 'Land of the Warrior' Just Gave Up a 1,200-Year-Old Secret — Found by a 6-Year-Old

In late April 2026, Henrik Refsnes Mørtvedt, a first-grader at Fredheim School in Norway, was on a class trip to a farm near Brandbu — tasked with a simple job: find rocks for an arts and crafts project. Walking through a plowed field, he noticed a strange piece of metal poking out of the dirt. "This part stuck out," he explained. "It was rust and dirt. So I thought I would pick it up and see what it was."

The teachers did exactly what archaeologists hoped for — they left it undisturbed and called in local experts rather than yanking it free themselves. The sword is now at the Museum of Cultural History in Oslo, where specialists are using X-ray imaging to learn more about how it was made. Fittingly, the region where Henrik found it — Hadeland — translates to "Land of the Warrior."

Eight friends just wanted 10,000 followers documenting their summer. They hit nearly 180,000 — and used it for something else entirely.

Eight Idaho friends started the "@208.Boys" Instagram account this summer with a modest goal: reach 10,000 followers documenting their adventures together. They blew past it — the account has since grown to nearly 180,000 followers.

The turning point wasn't planned. While spending time in the Boise River, the group started diving underwater just for fun, hoping to find fish, or maybe someone's lost sunglasses or watch. Instead, they found trash — cans, empty beer cases, far more than they expected. "It's pretty upsetting to see," said Drake, one of the friends. Landon Jones, who'd spent much of his life around the river, was just as surprised: "I didn't even know how much trash was on the river."

Instead of just complaining about it, they started pulling it out themselves and posted a video of the cleanup. It took off immediately — thousands of likes, shares, and comments, mostly people thanking them for taking care of their community. For Slee, another member of the group, it hit closer to home than the others realized: "The Boise River means a lot to me," he said. "We're here almost every day in the summer."

They've kept going back since, and are now encouraging their followers to join in and help protect the river too.

He Thought Only 3 Days Had Passed. It Had Been 15.

Erasto Crisanto Valdez, 31, was fishing with his father near San Francisco La Paz, Mexico, on July 23 when he spotted a robalo — a common snook — and followed it into a flooded cave inside a cenote. When he tried to turn back, he couldn't find his way out. "I was just swimming aimlessly, trying to get out, but there was no way out," he later said.

Search teams spent days without a real lead. Six days in, they found his harpoon roughly 65 meters into the cave system — a clue, but no proof he was still alive. Mexico's Navy divers pushed as deep as 100+ meters and eventually called off their search. By the time American cave-diving instructor Harry Gust and Mexican diver Rosalino "Rosso" Rivera joined the operation, it had officially become a recovery mission, not a rescue.

On his first solo dive, in near-zero visibility, Gust found something that changed everything: a small emergency air cylinder, abandoned about 100 meters into the cave. The next day, he went back to that exact spot and found a large, dry chamber. He called out into the darkness: "Is anyone there?" A voice answered: "Yes!"

Valdez had survived 15 days in total blackness on rainwater alone, sleeping, praying, and losing all sense of time — he believed only three days had passed. Gust and Rivera guided him through 100 meters of submerged passage back to the surface, severely dehydrated and malnourished, but alive. "We were prepared to find his body," fellow explorer Carlos Jiménez said. "But God had other plans."

A Curtain of Arms, 33 Feet Long, Drifting Through Total Darkness.

In late January 2026, scientists aboard the Schmidt Ocean Institute's research vessel, were using their ROV SuBastian to examine a submarine canyon wall off Argentina's coast when they spotted something almost nobody gets to see alive: a giant phantom jellyfish (Stygiomedusa gigantea), drifting 250 meters — roughly 820 feet — down.

Its bell, the dome-shaped "head," is actually modest in size — up to 1 meter, about 3.3 feet, across. The real scale comes from what trails behind it: four ribbon-like arms that can stretch up to roughly 33 feet. Unlike most jellyfish, it has no stinging tentacles at all. Instead, those long arms work almost like a curtain, snagging plankton and small fish that drift into them.

Here's what makes the sighting genuinely rare: the species was first collected in 1899, but wasn't even recognized as its own species until 60 years later. Since then, it's been directly, visually confirmed alive fewer than 130 times in over a century of ocean exploration — not because it's necessarily uncommon, but because the deep "midnight zone" it lives in is so vast, and so rarely visited by cameras, that even a large, slow-moving animal can go almost entirely unseen.

The same expedition also turned up the largest known coral reef of its kind in the world and 28 suspected new species — a reminder that even well-mapped coastlines like Argentina's still hide entire ecosystems nobody has properly looked at yet.
