Rare Wildlife Encounter - Dugong Watching Experience in Coron, Palawan

Did you know that Coron, Palawan is one of the few places in the Philippines where you can responsibly watch wild dugongs in their natural habitat?

Today, I joined a local-guided dugong watching tour and witnessed these gentle marine mammals gracefully swimming in the seagrass meadows.

DAMPULAN SEAWALL — COASTAL VIBES AT THE FOOT OF MT. MALINDIG!

📍 Barangay Dampulan, Torrijos, Marinduque

Kumusta, Wanderers! It’s your ever-curious lakwatsero, Alex The Wanderer, and today I found myself in a peaceful corner of Marinduque that honestly deserves more love — Dampulan Seawall, right here in Barangay Dampulan, Torrijos.

If you’ve been following my adventures, you’d know I have a soft spot for places where you can just sit, breathe in the sea breeze, and watch life go by. And guess what? This humble seawall gave me exactly that — plus the epic view of Mt. Malindig rising proudly in the background!

Why Should You Visit?
This isn’t your typical crowded tourist spot. In fact, it’s a serene stretch of seawall built to protect the barangay from high tide, but it doubles as the locals’ favorite hangout. Pure, unfiltered probinsya life.

Bonus Experience:
If you’re an adventure-seeker, Dampulan is one of the starting points for lesser-known trails up Mt. Malindig. It’s a moderate hike — around 8–12 hours round trip — but you’ll pass through lush coconut groves, open grasslands, and summit views that stretch all the way to Mindoro and Romblon on clear days.

Final Thoughts:
Dampulan Seawall may be simple, but it’s these kinds of places that remind us what real travel is about — not always the grand destinations, but the quiet corners where life flows at its own, beautiful pace.

📍Casa Real, Boac, Marinduque

Wanderers! Visit Casa Real, located in the heart of Boac! This elegant bahay-na-bato structure is not just a feast for the eyes, it is a keeper of Marinduque’s rich history.

Trivia Time: Casa Real is Marinduque's oldest government building, having served as the Spanish colonial seat of power in the late 1800s. It even witnessed the American occupation and the founding of our republic!

It was built during the Spanish colonial period, though the exact year is unknown, and is considered the province's oldest existing government building.

It was the headquarters of the Spanish colonial government in Marinduque, as well as the office of the gobernadorcillo (municipal leader).

Its bahay-na-bato (stone-and-wood house) architecture is typical of Philippine civic structures from the late 18th to early 19th centuries.

Today, it proudly stands as a heritage site, a must-see for both history buffs and culture lovers. Swipe by while you're in town to hear the stories whispering through its walls.

Did you know?
Marinduque's name is likely derived from "Marindik" or "Malindik," the old name for Mount Malindig, which means "stand tall" and is the island's highest peak. It is a dormant stratovolcano that rises 1,157 metres above sea level and has no recorded eruptions, but its hot springs and lush forests hint at ancient secrets.

Over the years, islanders have woven stories around the mountain, such as the story of a diwata who guards its summit and the folk love story of Princess Maring and Duque — a legend frequently told to explain the island's name, though the true origins are in the mountain's old name.

Here’s a fun fact: During the Spanish colonial era, Mount Malindig served as a lookout point against incoming Moro pirate raids. Locals and Spanish forces would climb its slopes to watch for approaching ships along Luzon's southern coast. Its strategic height made it the ideal natural watchtower, and hikers can now enjoy panoramic views of Marinduque's lush landscapes, coastal towns, and neighbouring islands such as Mindoro and Southern Luzon.

Have you ever gone hiking on Mount Malindig? Share your trail photos and memories — together, we can keep the spirit of this beautiful place alive.
