▪︎ Food
Microplastics are in fruit and vegetables, honey, bread, dairy, fish and meat from hamburgers to chicken. They are inside the yolks of eggs (and in the whites too).

▪︎ Water
Whether it comes from a tap or from a bottle, water is another notable point of exposure to microplastics. One study found the simple act of screwing a plastic bottle cap on and off dramatically increased the amount of microplastics found in the water it carried. With each twist on or off, it generated 553 microplastic particles per liter of water.

▪︎ Packaging and containers
Then there's the plastic that much of our food comes packaged in.

"Food stored in plastic inevitably will contain microplastics," says Adrian. "That can also include plastic-lined aluminum cans, like a can of beans."

At home, point-of-use filters can help if they are certified to reduce PFAS. Activated carbon and reverse osmosis units are the most common options.

A recent study links PFAS "forever chemical" detections in public drinking water to higher cancer rates in certain parts of the United States.

HOW OFTEN DO YOU WASH YOUR REFILLABLE DRINKING BOTTLES?

A study on the campus of Purdue University put everyday bottles under the microscope to see how clean they really are and which habits help or hurt. The takeaway is a reality check with simple fixes that anyone can put into practice.

Carrying a reusable water bottle is smart. It saves money. It cuts down on single-use plastic. It keeps you hydrated. But there's a catch.

The research team found that hot tea and hot coffee had, on average, far more microplastics than their chilled counterparts. Tea stood out the most, with expensive varieties served in disposable cups containing the most microplastics. The findings, the team said, "strongly suggest that the disposable cup material is a primary source of [microplastics] in our hot coffee samples."

South Australia will become the first state to ban soy sauce fish containers in a matter of weeks.

The containers, as well as plastic straws and cutlery attached to food or drinks, non-compostable fruit and vegetable stickers and prepackaged cups and bowls containing meals, will be phased out from September 1.

The items will join a wide list of banned single-use plastics like grocery bags, straws, cutlery, stirrers, cups, bowls, plates, containers, cotton buds, pizza savers, confetti, balloon sticks and ties and food bag tags.

Black plastic might seem like a harmless kitchen staple, but what if I told you it’s quietly contaminating your food?

Many black plastic utensils are made from recycled electronics like TVs and computer casings, loaded with flame retardants and heavy metals.

A 2024 study found 85% of black kitchen items contained banned flame retardants, some in alarmingly high concentrations. Heat those utensils in a pan or pot of oil, and those chemicals can leach into your meal. That means every stir, flip, or scoop could be dosing your food with hormone disruptors and carcinogens linked to thyroid problems, reproductive issues, and neurotoxicity.

No level of exposure is truly safe.

The fix is simple: swap out black plastic for stainless steel or wood. And don’t microwave plastic utensils or reuse them.

Small change. Big impact.
Toss the toxic spatula.
