San Lorenzo Ruiz, the first Filipino saint and martyr, was born in Binondo, Manila, around 1600 to a Chinese father and a Filipino mother. He grew up in a deeply Catholic environment, serving as an altar boy and later working as a calligrapher for the parish church.

He married and had three children, living a simple and devout life with his family. However, his life took a dramatic turn when he was accused of a crime he did not commit. To escape imprisonment, he joined a group of Dominican missionaries bound for Japan.

At the time, Christianity was banned in Japan, and Christians were persecuted brutally. When they arrived, Lorenzo and his companions were arrested and faced intense torture. Despite the pain and the promise of freedom if he renounced his faith, Lorenzo remained steadfast. His famous words of courage were:

“had I a thousand lives, all these to Him shall I offer.”

The St. John Bosco Parish - Ministry on Music & Cultural Affairs (SJB MOMCA), in cooperation with the Jesuit Music Ministry and the Philippine Choral Directors Association, presents a celebration of the Jubilee of Choirs in the 2025 Jubilee Year:

𝐖𝐈𝐓𝐇 𝐇𝐎𝐏𝐄, 𝐖𝐄 𝐒𝐈𝐍𝐆!
Transforming Filipino choirs into missionaries of evangelization

In this Jubilee of Hope, we look into the identity of the choir as artist, community, and missionary. We shed light on choirs as creative, responsible, and hopeful environments through a series of talks, discussions, and workshops featuring Fr. Manoling Francisco SJ, Prof. Mark Anthony Carpio, Mr. Nikko Oliver Villanueva, Prof. Alejandro Consolacion II, Dr. Maria Theresa Vizconde Roldan, Mr. Romar Chuca, Fr. Armand Robleza SDB, and other guests.

The whole-day celebration will be held on Saturday, November 15, from 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM, at St. John Bosco Parish, Makati City, Philippines, the Jubilee Church for Artists, Musical Bands, and Athletes, and the Braga Auditorium of Don Bosco Technical Institute of Makati, Inc.

Registration is open to singers, conductors, and enthusiasts from parish, school, institutional, and community-based choirs. Registration fees include lunch and conference kits. Discounts are available for group purchases, as well as senior citizens, PWDs, students, and active PCDA members.

This Jubilee Year of Hope, we invite Filipino Catholic choirs from our schools, parishes, institutions, and community-based groups to a celebration of the Jubilee of Choirs entitled “With Hope, We Sing”.

Join us on Saturday, November 15, at St. John Bosco Parish, the Jubilee Church for Artists, Musical Bands, and Athletes, for a day of prayer, stories, and music, with some of today’s movers and inspirations of the Philippine choral community.
