Isang Komedya sa Langit Closes the Hong Kong ASEAN Film Festival
One of Two Filipino Films Selected, the Feature Draws Laughter, Reflection—and International Interest
HONG KONG — August 31, 2025
The curtain fell on the Hong Kong ASEAN Film Festival 2025 with the rousing and heartwarming screening of Isang Komedya sa Langit, a Filipino historical fantasy comedy that captivated the audience as this year’s Closing Film. Hosted by the Hong Kong ASEAN Foundation, the festival spotlighted 24 outstanding films from across Southeast Asia, with Isang Komedya sa Langit proudly standing as one of only two Filipino feature films selected to represent the Philippines on the international stage.
Set against the backdrop of 1872 colonial Philippines, Isang Komedya sa Langit follows three priests who are mysteriously transported to the year 2024—where they navigate modern-day Manila with both confusion and courage. Blending satire, faith, and Filipino identity, the film uses humor as a powerful lens to explore themes of redemption, nationalism, and cultural continuity.
A Moment of Cultural Exchange
Following the screening, a post-screening conversation with producer and screenwriter Rossana Hwang and director Roi Calilong gave Hong Kong viewers deeper insight into the creative process and underlying message of the film. They shared stories from the film’s production, how real historical events inspired the characters, and how comedy was used to connect serious themes with younger audiences. “It’s an honor to close such a prestigious regional festival,” said Hwang. “We are deeply thankful to the Hong Kong ASEAN Foundation for giving our film this space—not just to entertain, but to introduce a piece of Filipino soul to new audiences. We hope Isang Komedya sa Langit has brought the people of Hong Kong a deeper appreciation of Philippine storytelling.”
More Than a Movie
The film, which has also been making rounds in Philippine schools as part of a values-based heritage education campaign, continues to gain traction with both students and educators. Its recent ASEAN recognition further cements its place as not only a compelling cinematic work, but also a tool for cross-cultural understanding and civic dialogue.
