“the river was for crossing, not for plunging into. a bridge was for getting to the other side, not for leaping off.”

and when i said cozy asian literature is my go-to genre, i meant it… but i didn’t expect the twist of this book at the end. i think i cried at least once in every chapter in this book. the second chance convenience store is about a homeless man, dokgo, who captures the heart of mrs. yeom, the owner of always convenience store (aka the inconvenience store). the story revolves around dokgo’s redemption in life, as he too shares his thoughts on change and second chances to the customers he meets.

my favorite thing about this novel is how the author, kim ho-yeon made it so realistic of how people are so quick to judge. it shows that there are still people in this world who are kindhearted, compassionate, and understanding just like dokgo. at least in fiction books, we’re given that hope so we’ll keep seeking that in those we meet.

also, a huge shoutout to the amazing translation by janet hong! i know it’s already difficult to translate literature, but even more so in making sure that the original message and whatever the author wanted to convey, may it be the lesson or feelings attached to it, reach the readers even in another language.

i must admit it was difficult to pick just one favorite line from the book like i usually do for reviews. i chose this one because it’s the line that hit me more that it should’ve. it reminded me of other times i’ve been in love and later on, crying into my pillow at 1AM, suppressing the noise because i might wake someone up and i wouldn’t know how to verbally say i’m crying over a boy. so for all the right and wrong reasons it has, this line resonated a lot with my past, and it comes to show that love finds its way back, like it did with me. and when i said the book before this featuring the love story of emily and josh was the greatest romance book ever, i think michael lee shot 3 points halfway across the court, then shoved joshua santiago and said “i’m the new book boyfriend, move!” well, he probably did that in my head instead of shoving a referee… but this just goes to show that the writing got better, more heartfelt, and just so appropriate for the quiet, no flashing lights and no big gestures type of love kate and michael shared. i could go on and on about romance books, how they make me feel, and why everyone should read it. so if this appears on whatever algorithm you’re on, maybe it’s love speaking, almost as quietly as kate would sneak in the backyard of michael.
