If you’re into the fuzzy Astrophytum asterias varieties, a good Hanazono is always a fun one to watch mature. What makes them so unique is how those random extra woolly spots keep popping up all over the body as the plant grows it’s like watching a pattern develop in real time.

Just finished getting this specimen settled into its new home. There’s honestly nothing more satisfying than that exact moment the fresh top dressing goes on and completely locks in the look.

It’s officially ready to hit the benches and soak up some sun. ☀️🌵

The best kind of mess. 📦✂️🪴

Another batch of incredible specimens just finished their bare-root prep, and you know what that means—it’s officially time to pot up.

Looking at them sitting in the tray like this, it’s always amazing to see the raw shapes, the massive root bases, and the unique variations of each cultivar before they get tucked into their new substrate. We’ve got everything from chunky, heavily textured multi-ribs to beautiful, clean geometric forms ready for the bench.

The soil mix is ready, the pots are lined up, and the greenhouse is prepped for a massive potting session. Get ready, because the full transformation videos are coming up next!

Late-night greenhouse rounds just hit different when this happens. 🌙✨

If you’ve never smelled a Discocactus horstii in full bloom, it’s honestly hard to describe just how incredible it is. They are strict night-bloomers, opening up after dark and filling the entire area with a sweet, intense fragrance that you can smell the second you walk through the door.

The bittersweet part? This flawless white show only lasts for a single night. By tomorrow morning, it’ll be gone. It’s a short-lived reminder of why we stay up late checking the benches and shining our flashlights! 🤍

Some plants just look like living sculptures. 📐✨
If you appreciate intense, deeply defined geometry, this Astrophytum kikko is the ultimate bench stopper. The way those pointed, tortoise-shell ribs curve and stack creates a texture that doesn't even look real. It takes years of slow, patient growth to get character and depth like this, and that’s exactly why it’s such a prized specimen in the collection.

No flowers needed to show off today—the structure alone does all the talking. 🦖🌵
