โMalaybalay City, Bukidnon โ
September 12, 2025
โA lechon prepared for a graduation. A family asleep. A hammer and steel pipe.
โWhat should have been a proud celebration turned into one of Bukidnonโs darkest tragedies.
โ
โOn May 21, 2025, the Labora Andohon family was attacked inside their home in Purok 11, Sitio Andohon, Barangay Managok. The father, mother, and 15-year-old son were bludgeoned to death while sleeping. Two younger daughters survived by hiding under clothes and plywoodโone later gave a chilling account that helped build the case.
โ
โAfter nearly four months of waiting, the Bukidnon Provincial Police Office (BUKPPO) filed for a warrant of arrest. On September 11, the Regional Trial Court Branch 46 issued the warrant against John Kyler Labora Andohon , the eldest son of the victims. He now faces two counts of parricide and one count of murder, all non-bailable.
โ
โDuring a press conference at the Malaybalay City Police Station, PCol. Jovit L. Culaway , Provincial Director of BUKPPO, confirmed that the suspect had not fled. โHe remained in the area while we built the case. We waited until the evidence was solid and the court was ready,โ he said.
โ
โPolice say the motive stemmed from the suspectโs fear of being exposed. He had allegedly stopped attending school two years ago but continued to ask for money, pretending to be enrolled. His parents, believing he was graduating, prepared a lechon for the occasionโunaware of the deception and the danger it masked.
โAccording to a reliable source close to the family, the suspectโbelieved to be 23 years oldโwas allegedly using illegal drugs, which may have affected his mental state.
โCommunity rumors suggest he had long shown signs of erratic behavior and โtalking nonsense.โ
โHowever, BUKPPO clarified during the press conference that they could not conduct a drug test due to legal restrictions.
โโWe are bound by procedure. Without a court order or consent, we cannot perform drug testing,โ an officer stated.
โ
โIn my opinion and views, we must treat this tragedy as a wake-up call. It reminds us that silence, secrets, and pressure inside families can lead to devastating consequences. We need to create safe spaces for young people to speak honestly, ask for help, and be heard without judgment. As youth, we must learn to face the truthโeven when itโs painfulโand build a culture of openness, mental wellness, and accountability.
โ
โThis case is more than a crimeโitโs a mirror. It reflects the hidden struggles inside homes, the weight of expectations, and the silence that can turn deadly.
โFor the people of Bukidnonโespecially the grieving family and relativesโthis arrest marks the beginning of hope that someday, justice will prevail.
โ
โBut beyond justice, this tragedy sends a strong message to parents and elders in every household:
โWe must stay vigilant. We must know what our children are truly going throughโwhat theyโre doing, who theyโre with, and whether theyโre involved in harmful behaviors like alleged drug use or deception.
โ
โItโs not enough to provide food, shelter, and school fees. We must also provide presence, guidance, and honest conversations.
โBecause silence can be deadly. And awareness can save lives.
