The three "holes" are the result of the 3 carpels in coconut flowers, and three carpels is typical of the family Arecaceae (Palms). The "holes" are actually germination pores, where one is usually functional and the other two are plugged. The new coconut shoot will emerge from the functional, open, germination pore.

Kakawate leaves and flowers are edible.

Aside from being used as fence, fodder and insect repellant, among others, kakawate or madre cacao is also edible for human consumption. The leaves are used as adjunct to adobo, a Filipino dish. In addition, its flowers are used as salad while others blanch and add it to ensalada with tomatoes, eggplants, onions, mangoes, and bagoong alamang.
