โ€œThe Filipino is worth dying for.โ€

โ€œA work of art is a world in itself, reflecting senses and emotions of the artistโ€™s world.โ€ - Hans Hofmann

A day, just like a story, is made great by the hands that create it.

Literature and art have long between using different languages to tell the same thing - to unveil the hidden world behind the scenes. A well-chosen word can create the same illusion as a well-chosen brushstroke. A comparison can be as meaningful as a portrait, and a single color can hide as much as a whole sentence. A brilliantly written line can be as mysterious as the best painted masterpiece, telling the story of a personโ€™s life.

For an artist, this is not the case. They try to capture the invisible with the help of the most skillful strokes and shapes. They express their feelings by virtue of inkโ€”and as the saying goesโ€”a single picture can convey more than a thousand words.

The Art Director, Ms. Alexa Canquin knows the connection between art and literature. She knows that in both cases, the meaning is in the hands of the creator. She knows that her words have the same power as the brushstrokes of artists, unveiling the world behind them, telling their stories, and calling for action.

So today, we want to celebrate not only a member of the publication but also an artist whose words create color, whose stories make masterpieces, and whose meanings make us think.

May your new day be as beautiful as your art, as magical as your stories, and as full of meaning as your words. Happy birthday Ms. Alexa!

The Filipina sensation started with breathtaking momentum to score, 4-6, 6-4, 6-0, in a crucial one-hour-and-45-minute clash that showcased her relentless grit, determination, and hard work. Alex Eala defeated world No. 3 seed Jessica Pegula of the United States of America to clinch the title of singles champion in 2026 Mubadala DC Open on August 3, Monday.

With triumph in making it to the finals, Eala toppled over the defending champion Leylah Fernandez in the second round before a commanding finish that took out Elina Svitolina of Ukraine. Steadying her groundstrokes, Eala marched against the four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka, sweeping a clean-set finish.

"Before the final yesterday, I got so many messages, sweet messages from my family and my friends who are on tour, wherever else in the world. I thought to myself, I feel so much love," Eala said in an interview.

After long rain delays, the Filipina swept with a slow rhythmic left-handed serve that shortly ripped on the half set with an error in hand. Tying the knot, the American tennis player rallied against Eala, 4-4, through the set that went on breaking Ealaโ€™s momentum.

Despite a suspension due to rain, with Pegula set to serve, the two players exchanged holds. Eala strikes to love against Pegula with a volley in plan, holding a 5-4 advantage until the ninth game.

Pegula took a forehand long as redemption for the backhand strokes of the Filipina. Eala seized a solid service game, overpowering Pegula in the third set with 6-0.

โ€œSo standing here in the middle of all this love, my first chance at a title, knowing that it won't be my last, and already having achieved this feat and this milestone for my career, I knew that whatever would have happened after this match, it would have already been a win for me," Eala added.

Meanwhile, Eala is set to level up in her career as she moves to No. 20 in the Womenโ€™s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings, uplifting the spirits of every Filipino watcher across the globe.

The phrase is true: fiction often mashes with reality.

A few carefully drawn out syllables in a poem bears the same breath as a few quick words in an article about the travesties of being. A rhyme in a verse knocks the same punches as an allegory for starvation, written in a newspaper article for the sake of understanding. A stanza in unstructured prose, when written with careful juxtaposition, can land as smoothly as a simple essay about poverty.

Believe it or not, there can be no fiction without lived experience. There can be no portrait without a muse to have inspired it. Ms. Erica Crisostomo brings what pictures sometimes fail to convey: the gravity of written word in any format.

Blending two modes of journalistic medium, her literary articles are a feast for the soul, her DevCom essays a question for the mind. On this day of celebration and gravitas, may her heart be remembered in the midst of her talent. It takes blood to carry messages through the veins, and similarly, ink to deliver provocative sentences into the page.

Happy birthday, Ms. Erica! May your day be as wondrous as your written words.
