SDS Materum presents Division strategic direction, underscores shared role in learners’ success

Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Margarito B. Materum presented the Schools Division Office (SDO) of Mandaluyong's strategic direction, aligned with the Department of Education's (DepEd) priority agenda, during the School Governance and Operations Division (SGOD)-led Parenting Session.

Addressing parents and other stakeholders, SDS Materum emphasized that the Division's strategic direction is anchored on DepEd's key priorities to ensure quality, inclusive, and learner-centered education.

Materum underscored that achieving these goals requires the collective support of families, schools, the local government unit, and the community.

During his presentation, the division chief executive highlighted the Division's commitment to strengthening foundational learning, promoting learner well-being, ensuring safe and inclusive learning environments, enhancing teacher quality, and fostering effective governance and stakeholder engagement.

He also stressed that parents play a vital role in the holistic development of learners, noting that education extends beyond the classroom and begins at home through guidance, discipline, and values formation.

The Parenting Session, spearheaded by the SGOD, served as a platform to strengthen the partnership between schools and families while equipping parents with knowledge and strategies to support their children's learning and overall well-being.

LGU-Mandaluyong City chief exec urges parents to shape responsible, respectful, safe children

Mandaluyong City Mayor Carmelita A. Abalos emphasized the vital role of parents in shaping the future of their children during her message to parents and education stakeholders.

Mayor Abalos said that every family shares the same dream of providing their children with a better future.

Abalos reminded parents that they are their children's first teachers and, therefore, carry the primary responsibility of instilling respect, good values, and the courage to stand for what is right.

The chief executive also urged parents to guide and closely supervise their children to keep them safe from all forms of danger.

At the same time, she stressed that parents should ensure their children grow into responsible individuals who will not become the source of harm or danger to others.

"By raising children with discipline, respect, and strong moral values, we help build a safer land more responsible community for everyone," Mayor Abalos said.

SDO M’luyong mounts 1st sportsfest for non-teaching workforce

MARKING a first in the division, the Schools Division Office (SDO) of Mandaluyong City launched Sportsfest 2026 for non-teaching personnel to strengthen teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship among education support staff.

More than a hundred non-teaching personnel gathered at the Senate President Neptali A. Gonzales Integrated School (SPNAGIS) Gymnasium for the opening of the division’s maiden sports event last June 26.

Among the participants, Dr. Rex Ado, Chief Education Supervisor of the School Governance and Operations Division (SGOD), underscored the importance of the sportsfest in fostering camaraderie and promoting the physical and mental well-being of non-teaching personnel.

“[Sportsfest 2026] will surely encourage all non-teaching personnel to promote sportsmanship and physical well-being for us beyond our administrative tasks,” Ado said.

Sportsfest 2026 for Mandaluyong City Non-Teaching Personnel features three sporting events—basketball, volleyball, and badminton.

Six teams will compete for the inaugural basketball championship, while five teams will face off in a single round-robin volleyball tournament.

HIS receives 100 stand fans to boost classroom ventilation

HULO Integrated School (HIS) received 100 stand fans from alumna and school guardian Michelle Bautista, providing additional ventilation for classrooms from Kindergarten to Grade 10.

The donated fans were distributed across the school's classrooms to help improve learning conditions, particularly during periods of high temperatures.

Bautista said the donation was her way of giving back to the school that played an important role in her education and of supporting the welfare of learners and school personnel.

"As an alumna and a guardian, I understand the importance of having a comfortable learning environment. This is my simple way of giving back to Hulo Integrated School and helping our learners stay focused and motivated despite the heat," Bautista said.

The donation is expected to enhance classroom comfort, improve ventilation, and help learners and teachers remain focused during classes.

It also underscores the important role of alumni and stakeholders in supporting school programs and strengthening partnerships that contribute to the continuous improvement of educational facilities and services.

PES Library marks 128th Independence Day with free book drive

PROMOTING literacy through freedom of choice, the Plainview Elementary School (PES) Library rolled out a free book giveaway activity to celebrate the 128th Philippine Independence Day on June 12 at San Joaquin, Plainview.

Carrying the theme "May Layang Mamili," the initiative was opened to children and adults to freely select and take home books among the display offered at no cost, reflecting the event's theme.

According to Lilian Lincuna, school librarian of PES, the project was organized both to commemorate the country’s independence and to emphasize the importance of literacy to all individuals of all ages.

M'luyong delivers 8 golds as NCR extends Palaro championship dynasty

TEAM Mandaluyong played a crucial role in the National Capital Region’s successful title defense in the Palarong Pambansa 2026, contributing eight gold medals to NCR’s championship campaign and finishing with a total haul of 19 medals.

Mandaluyong City amassed eight gold medals, four silver medals, and seven bronze medals, earning recognition as the ninth top-performing city nationwide in the secondary division of the country’s premier sporting event for student-athletes.

Heading the city’s medal surge was La Salle Green Hills (LSGH) swimmer James Ajido, who emerged as one of Mandaluyong’s most decorated athletes after capturing five gold medals in the 50-meter butterfly, 100-meter freestyle, 100-meter butterfly, 4x50-meter relay, and 4x50-meter freestyle relay events.

Ajido also added a silver medal in the 50-meter freestyle.

Fellow LSGH swimmer Behrouz Mojdeh contributed a gold medal in the 4x100-meter medley relay and a bronze medal in the 200-meter butterfly, while teammate Rodevic Gonzalvo bagged a silver medal in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay.

Jose Rizal University (JRU) standout Karl David Kens C. Tacoy also delivered a stellar performance in athletics, winning gold in the 4x100-meter relay, silver in the 4x400-meter relay, and bronze medals in both the 400-meter run and 200-meter run.

LSGH taekwondo jin Jaime De Guia struck gold in taekwondo, while archer Juan Villamore added another gold medal as a member of NCR’s victorious archery team event contingent.

In basketball, JRU’s Jairus Armendez, Mikhail Dagumanpan, and Lorenz Cinco helped NCR secure the bronze medal in the secondary boys’ 3x3 competition.

At the elementary level, Ethan Mikhail S. Calinawan of Lourdes School of Mandaluyong (LSM) was part of the NCR boys’ basketball team that clinched the silver medal in the 5x5 event.

Meanwhile, Isaac Lopez Integrated School (ILIS) dance sport athletes Lawren Vhier B. Zaldiva and Rozetter Anne E. Dangaran captured two bronze medals after placing in the Single Dance Pasodoble and Secondary Grade A Latin 5-Dance categories.

The impressive showing reflected the hard work, discipline, and dedication of Mandaluyong’s student-athletes, coaches, trainers, school heads, parents, and stakeholders who worked tirelessly throughout the preparation period.

In a Facebook post, the division acknowledged the unwavering support of the Local Government Unit of Mandaluyong, led by Mayor Carmelita A. Abalos, whose commitment to youth and sports development helped pave the way for the city's success.
