HHISians provide 'Mental First Aid' to 169 fire survivors

WHILE relief goods rebuild homes, it is compassion that rebuilds hope.

This was the guiding principle behind Highway Hills Integrated School’s (HHIS) "Oplan RISE" outreach, which provided critical psychosocial support to 169 learners of Addition Hills Integrated School (AHIS) on Feb. 1.

Following the devastating fire in Block 36, Brgy. Addition Hills last January 19, organizers recognized that the student victims needed more than just hygiene kits—they needed a safe space to process their trauma.

Integrated into the relief operations, the Psychosocial Support Activities served as "mental first aid."

Volunteer teachers and the Hillsiders’ staff facilitated group sessions where the children were encouraged to express their emotions and share their experiences in a supportive environment.

"The goal is to ensure a learner-centered environment where they feel safe to return to normalcy," explained Ma. Elizabeth T. Mateo, SPJ Coordinator and proponent of the project.

The sessions aimed to help the learners navigate the stress and fear caused by the sudden displacement.

By validating their feelings, the HHIS team helped reduce the long-term emotional impact of the disaster.

The initiative, supported by Principal Efren S. Consemino and PSDS Anthony Augusto M. Garcia, highlights the school's commitment to the holistic well-being of the learners—proving that in times of crisis, mental health is just as important as physical survival.

Garcia to CJs: service over awards

A PUBLIC schools district supervisor in-charge (PSDS) of Journalism reminded the importance of sharing time, talent and strength to others over awards or recognition among campus journalists during the TeaManda Loves and Cares (TLC): Oplan Rise (Relief Intervention and Support for Emergencies at Addition Hills Integrated School (AHIS) conference room, Feb.1.

“Ibahagi ang iyong oras, talent at lakas, hindi para sa papuri o parangal, kundi para sa paglilingkod (Share your time, talent, and strength—not for praise or awards, but for service)” said Mr. Anthony Augusto M. Garcia, Public Schools District Supervisor (PSDS) in-charge of Journalism in an inspirational message.

Garcia encouraged the campus journalists to write meaningful stories that can truly inspire others to help those in need as they will have the chance to engage with AHIS students and see beyond the statistics to uncover the true stories of the people

“Maraming salamat sa pagpapatunay na ang mga campus journalists ay hindi lamang nagbabalita tungkol sa community, kayo po ay nagmamalasakit din dito. (Thank you for demonstrating that campus journalists do more than just cover community news—they show genuine compassion for the people they serve.)” Garcia added.

The supervisor also reiterated that as student writers they were trained to be keen observers, active listeners, and voice for the voiceless.

“Ang tunay na serbisyo ay ang pagbibigay ng may puso, at ang tunay na tagumpay ay ang pag-angat ng kapuwa (True service is giving from the heart, and true success is the lifting up of others.” he emphasized.

Garcia concluded his speech with a hope that each campus journalist should remember that their greatest headlines are the lives they help change.
