Book Review: Boyfriend Mo? by Charlie St Cyr
โ ๏ธTrigger warnings: mentions of cheating and miscarriage
Boyfriend Mo? isnโt just a romanceโitโs also a celebration of culture.
The main characters are Devonte and Tala, carry the story, but Gavinoโs role adds depth and heart to the book!
Tala finally found the courage to leave San Francisco and start fresh, leaving behind the pain of a broken relationship. Devonte, meanwhile, represents Louisiana Creole heritageโdetermined to finish his studies while navigating love and cultural discovery. He definitely fell first, and his persistence in pursuing Tala was both sweet and admirable. And why not? Pinay yan e!
What makes the story stand out is how Devonte sought not only Talaโs heart but also her familyโs acceptance. He learned Filipino culture almost like a crash course, and this is where Gavinoโs importance shines through. His guidance helped bridge those cultural gaps.
The book does attempt to juggle a lot of themesโlove, identity, family, and cultural intersectionsโand at times I felt a little overwhelmed by how much it wanted to tackle all these. Still, overall, I truly enjoyed reading it.
Really curious about the Halo-Halo Frozen Cup!
What strike me most is how it blended romance with cultural appreciation in a way that felt authentic and heartfelt.
