People have beautiful things to say about you, but you have to die first.

I've lost count of how many times I've attended a wake or read a tribute that began with, "I never got the chance to tell you this..." Suddenly, people remember every good thing about someone.

How kind they were.
How generous they were.
How much they were loved.
How much they meant to everyone.

It makes me wonder how different that person's life might have felt if they had heard those words while they were still alive.

Why do we wait until someone is gone before we become generous with our appreciation? Why are flowers easier to give than compliments? Why are eulogies often filled with words we could have said over coffee, during dinner, or in a simple phone call?

I hope we don't have to lose someone before we tell them we're proud of them. Before we thank them for everything they've done. Before we apologize. Before we say, "I love you." Because the saddest words are often not the ones spoken at a funeral.

They are the ones that begin with, "I wish I had told you..."

You eventually reach a point where you'd rather be rested than impressive.

When I was younger, I thought life was about being noticed. I wanted people to be impressed by what I had accomplished, where I was, how busy I was, and how much I was doing. I chased validation because I believed that being admired meant I was doing something right.

Now, I'd rather choose peace than applause. I no longer feel the need to prove myself to everyone, explain every decision, or seek recognition just to feel worthy. I've learned that not every achievement needs an audience, and not everyone needs to understand the life I'm building.

These days, I'd rather move quietly. I'd rather work at my own pace, protect my energy, and build a life that feels good instead of one that simply looks good.

When I was younger, I wanted to stand out.

Now, I'm perfectly happy being in the background, growing in silence, and letting my life speak for itself.

Because the older I get, the more I realize that peace is a far greater achievement than applause. 🧑
