Exit 8

Based on the game of the same title from Kotake Create, Exit 8 is a Japanese horror film that takes place in the eerie underground station halls which is already nightmare fuel for many. The protagonist is trapped in an infinite loop unless he finds the real Exit 8. The condition states to see the anomalies to progress, and the journey to get there might seem repetitive yet builds up the tension and the uncertainty of the horrors that lie in the next hall. The difference from the source game is that they also brought in the back stories of the characters which connects them to the audience. It’s the anxiety of the unknown and the test of observation skills that can indeed rattle the brain with hopelessness and give up. Makes us wonder if we can also survive if trapped in a game like this.

The Long Walk

From the novel by Stephen King, The Long Walk shows another dystopian America with a deadly game with a simple rule: walk until one is left. The purpose was to motivate the youth in a very broken society. The walk seems harmless at first but once the first body falls, the bloodbath and tension rises. It is grueling and it projects the pain and struggle to the audience. Though it is quite weird that they still give moving pep talk despite the condition. It has the potential to be more dramatic and moving, yet the deaths were too quick and the build up is quite scattered. It feels like an illusion, but the game is really brutal, but also promises an opportunity to change their lives or the society. I will also try to read the book to see the difference and see if it is really really worth the challenge.

Kontrabida Academy

What seems to be the most overused plot in TV and movies is what made Kontrabida Academy fun and entertaining in its run. We all know the dynamics of bidas and kontrabidas and how they make the story interesting, and it sometimes also shows in reality with our own heroes and villains in our lives. Barbie and Eugene paired with the most iconic villains of many generations is celebrated as an institution in this film. Being too good does have its limits and will definitely bring out the pent up badness in everyone. Chris Martinez indeed is a master in terms of campy comedy with a touch of scifi. And it also jabs in some commentary on the entertainment industry on taking new risks or sticking to the formula that they think still works. Kontrabida Academy was indeed a delightful surprise and I would think a spin off can also be possible to extend to more iconic Pinoy villains.

Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale

From the hit series of the same name has transcended into many seasons and movies which are loved by fans. Going into the film with just a minimal knowledge about the series, It seems like a gamble if I would like this or not. Yet it did keep a momentum of interesting scenes that lead up to the final bow for the franchise. It also gives tribute to one of their most loved characters Violet Crawley, The Dowager Countess of Grantham played by Maggie Smith who died in 2024.Going into the 1930’s The Crawley’s face the challenge of scandals and financial troubles which lead them to change which both the masters and servants feels conflicted and makes the future uncertain. It’s simple yet an impactful finale of the high society story.

Jujutsu Kaisen: Hidden Inventory / Premature Death – The Movie

Fans of the anime and manga for Jujutsu Kaisen notes that this chapter of the story is a pivotal point for the characters of Sattoru Gojo, Suguru Geto, and also shows the backstory of Toji Fushiguro. Also featuring the younger versions of teachers and staff of Jujutsu high that possess incredible power, It shows how much has changed compared to the current timeline. With a mission to protect a human vessel, Gojo and Geto’s friendship and powers are pushed to the limits and breaks them. As expected, animation was top notch yet there is very minimal to no new scenes and scripts were added. Though seeing it on the big screen indeed intensifies everything for our enjoyment.
