Online discussions surrounding the Tacloban City school shooting have shifted toward the broader issue of so-called βcopycatβ violence, following claims circulating on social media that one of the suspects may have worn a KMFDM band shirt before and after the attack.
Authorities have identified the suspects as two minors from San Jose National High School in Tacloban City. The incident left three people dead and 20 others injured, according to police reports.
While investigators have not confirmed any ideological motive or verified the significance of clothing allegedly worn after the incident, the detail has drawn comparisons to past school shootings linked to Columbine High School in the United States.
The Columbine attack in 1999, carried out by Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, has been widely studied in academic and security research as a turning point in modern school violence. Over the years, several later attacks in the United States have been cited in studies as showing varying degrees of βColumbine influence,β including cases where perpetrators reportedly expressed fascination with earlier shooters or were found with similar imagery or references.
Among these is the January 4, 2024 shooting at Perry High School in Iowa, where 17-year-old Dylan Butler opened fire, killing a sixth-grade student and injuring seven others before taking his own life. Reports from investigators noted that Butler had posted on social media prior to the attack, including a TikTok video believed to contain the song βStray Bulletβ by industrial band KMFDM. Authorities later said he was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. In the aftermath, his parents expressed shock and said they were trying to understand what led to the attack, while friends described signs of bullying and emotional distress but also expressed regret that they felt they were not able to provide enough support.
A similar case occurred in Madison, Wisconsin, on December 16, 2024, when 15-year-old freshman Natalie βSamanthaβ Rupnow carried out a shooting at Abundant Life Christian School, killing a teacher and a student before dying by su***de. Police said the motive appeared to be the result of multiple factors still under investigation. Reports and interviews from acquaintances described Rupnow as a quiet and often solitary student, while also noting that she had experienced family challenges, including the divorce of her parents. Some accounts also indicated she had a close connection with her father, including shared time at shooting ranges. Investigators later examined her online activity as part of efforts to understand her behavior leading up to the attack.
Similar patterns have also been documented internationally. In Southeast Asia, recent analyses and case reports have pointed to school-related attacks in Indonesia and Thailand where investigators later examined online behavior, manifestos, or symbolic references tied to previous mass shootings abroad, including Columbine. Researchers often describe this phenomenon as βmemetic violence,β where attackers are influenced by shared online narratives, imagery, or notoriety surrounding past incidents, as discussed in a 2025 report by the Global Network on Extremism and Technology (GNET) on βcosplaying Columbineβ and the spread of transnational extremist aesthetics.
However, experts caution that such associations do not automatically indicate motive. In many cases, law enforcement investigations later find that factors such as personal grievances, mental health issues, family stressors, or social conflicts play a more direct role, with symbolism often overinterpreted in early reporting stages.
In an interview with CNN, the German industrial rock band KMFDM, which has repeatedly been drawn into online discussions due to its association with Columbine-era imagery, has condemned school shootings and emphasized that its music stands against violence. The band has said it does not support or encourage violent acts and has rejected attempts to link its work to mass shootings.
The Tacloban school shooting remains under active investigation, with authorities continuing to assess digital evidence, background factors, and the sequence of events.
Officials have urged the public to avoid speculation while the case is being processed and to rely on verified updates from investigators.
