Watchful
Colossians 4:2 (ESV)
Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving.
What does being watchful mean? According to Merriam-Webster, watchful means carefully observant, attentive, and vigilant, often with the purpose of anticipating danger or opportunity. It describes being alert, wary, or on guard, such as keeping a “watchful eye” on someone or something. This means, from a prayer perspective, that as we pray we must also be carefully observant, attentive, and discerning of what God is showing and saying, much more in His Word. I learned in the past that praying His Word is a powerful way to pray too. As we pray, we need to intercede and supplicate while we may be facing troubles, dangers, and challenges in life. As we pray, we do not only anticipate those challenges, but we also claim faith for the divine opportunities and blessings that God will give and provide for us. As we pray, we guard ourselves and others and remain alert in interceding for the life’s every circumstances and even warring against the enemy’s attacks. But what reminds me the most in this verse is that thanksgiving and steadfastness (or faithfulness) should always be coupled with our being watchful in prayer, for that is the will of God for us. I remind myself again to pray without ceasing.
