Further Sin Multiplies, and So Do the Consequences

Psalms 106:24-29 (ESV)
Then they despised the pleasant land, having no faith in his promise. They murmured in their tents, and did not obey the voice of the LORD. Therefore he raised his hand and swore to them
that he would make them fall in the wilderness, and would make their offspring fall among the nations, scattering them among the lands. Then they yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor, and ate sacrifices offered to the dead; they provoked the LORD to anger with their deeds, and a plague broke out among them.

What Israelites did wrong while in their way to God’s promised land;
- ‘They despised the Promised Land’.
- ‘They had no faith in God’s promise’.
- ‘They murmured and complained’.
- ‘They did not obey God’s voice’.

What then are the consequences of their disobedience;
- ‘God’s heavy hand came against them, and they fell in the wilderness’.
- ‘Their offspring were scattered among the nations, and their lands were affected’.
- ‘They became yoked and burdened by idolatry’.
- ‘God, in His anger, sent a plague upon them’.

Three lessons I can learn from the story which the psalmist recalled in his song;
- ‘Obeying God, His voice, and His Word matters greatly’. I must take God’s instructions seriously because obedience matters to Him. Disobedience has consequences.
- ‘I must choose gratitude instead of complaining and murmuring’. I should learn to be grateful at all times and in every circumstance, rather than constantly complaining about what I lack or what I am going through. Murmuring and complaining displease God, while gratitude demonstrates that I trust His goodness and faithfulness.
- ‘I must believe unwaveringly in God and His promises’. I have to trust God even when I cannot yet see how His promise will be fulfilled. Despising His promises, doubting His Word, and allowing fear to overcome my faith displease God even more. I must choose to believe that God is faithful, that His Word is true, and that He is able to fulfill what He has promised.

What Leads Us Into The Sin Of Idolatry?

Psalms 106:19-22 (ESV)
They made a calf in Horeb and worshiped a metal image. They exchanged the glory of God for the image of an ox that eats grass. They forgot God, their Savior, who had done great things in Egypt, wondrous works in the land of Ham, and awesome deeds by the Red Sea.

Most of the time, if not the very reason why people resort to worshiping, giving homage to, and honoring graven images, or even treat handmade images as a form of spirituality, is because they are either ignorant of who the true God is or have forgotten who He is. They attempt to create an image of God or other forms of gods with their own hands and efforts, giving themselves something physical to touch and something visible to look upon. But the sin of idolatry is a mockery of the very nature of God. God is Spirit, and He can only be worshiped according to the truth and in spirit. This ignorance and forgetfulness of who the true God is can lead to rebellion, witchcraft, and willful disobedience. The sins that mock and dishonor God and ultimately bring grave consequences.
The Israelites forgot who their true God was, and this forgetfulness eventually led them into idolatry. In the same way, when we shift our focus away from God, we can eventually fall into any form of idolatry.

Jealousy->Rebellion->Affect Others

Psalms 106:16-18 (ESV)
“When men in the camp were jealous of Moses and Aaron, the holy one of the LORD, the earth opened and swallowed up Dathan, and covered the company of Abiram. Fire also broke out in their company; the flame burned up the wicked.”

Another profound story recalled by the psalmist in his song is about what happened to the Israelites in the wilderness after they forgot God’s faithfulness and works; then came their wanton cravings for personal and selfish desires, followed by challenging and putting God Himself to the test. Another sin then sprang up—men like Dathan and two others (this was recorded in the book of Numbers) began to be “jealous” of the leadership of Moses and Aaron, essentially questioning, “Why should Moses and Aaron have special authority over us?” (from Numbers 16:3, 13).

That sin of jealousy led them to challenge God’s appointed leadership and reject God’s order and authority. It then progressed further, influencing others to join them. This progressing sin then brought God’s judgment upon them. What happened was truly terrifying, and it was literal and immediate—they were swallowed up by the ground as God caused the ground beneath Dathan, Abiram, and those associated with them to split open, and they went down alive into the earth (from Numbers 16:28–30).

I am reminded how this internal sin of “jealousy” can corrupt the heart, causing it to become rebellious. That rebellion can then influence and affect others, eventually resulting in greater consequences. Being swallowed up by the ground may not happen today in the same way God demonstrated His judgment against those wicked people, but this sin can still bring serious consequences, such as spiritual decline and derailment, the sin of slander and division, spiritual unrest, broken relationships, and other forms of destruction.

What begins as an internal sin in the heart should never be taken lightly. If jealousy is allowed to grow unchecked, it can develop into rebellion, spread to others, and produce consequences far greater than what we initially imagined.

Did Not Wait->Wanton Cravings->Put God To Test

Psalms 106:13-15 (ESV)
“But they soon forgot his works; they did not wait for his counsel. But they had a wanton craving in the wilderness, and put God to the test in the desert; he gave them what they asked, but sent a wasting disease among them.”

As I further read the psalmist’s reflection on Israel’s history in the wilderness, he mentioned succeeding sins that followed when they forgot what God had done for them—how He delivered them from Egypt, divided the Red Sea, protected them, provided manna, and led them through the wilderness. This forgetfulness led to ungratefulness and murmuring, but it also progressed into three further sins:
- They Did Not Wait for God’s Counsel. They became impatient with God’s timing and direction, choosing immediate satisfaction instead. They began to doubt God, His Word, His promises, and His counsel.
- They Had Wanton Cravings in the Wilderness. Because of their impatience, their selfish and sinful desires began to take control. What they wanted became more important than trusting what God had already provided and promised.
- They Put God to the Test. Instead of trusting God’s character and faithfulness, they demanded that God prove Himself according to their own expectations.

The consequences then was described in the verse 16 next -- God “gave them what they asked, but sent a wasting disease among them.”

This progression reminds me to guard my heart. When things do not go according to my way, when difficult situations arise, or when frustration begins to creep in, I must not allow impatience, cravings, or doubt to take control. Instead, I need to stop, pray, remember what God has already done, remember His Word and promises, and ask the Holy Spirit to guide me and give me His counsel. I am reminded that when I forget God’s faithfulness, I become vulnerable to my own desires. But when I remember His faithfulness, I can wait for His counsel, trust His provision, and refuse to put Him to the test.
