The Andrea Doria sank due to a collision with the Swedish ship MS Stockholm on the night of July 25, 1956. The accident occurred in heavy fog near Nantucket, Massachusetts. The main cause of the disaster was navigational errors from both ships, including miscalculations of distance and speed.

The Stockholm struck the starboard (right) side of the Andrea Doria below the waterline, creating a massive hole. Despite the Andrea Doria’s watertight compartments, the flooding could not be controlled, causing the ship to list quickly.

The crew of both ships made critical mistakes, including misunderstandings in their use of radar.

After the collision, the Andrea Doria gradually leaned to one side and sank 11 hours later, on July 26, 1956.
