The 2025 Philippine Midterm Elections: Your Vote, Your Voice, Your Power

Today, May 12, 2025, we witness democracy in motion as millions of Filipino people head to the polls to shape the nation’s future in the 2025 Philippine midterm elections. The elected government officials from the local to national political landscape do not only determine the future of the country—but also which voices are heard in the halls of power and justice. The results of the midterm elections are not just about who wins and who loses but about the leadership we choose to uphold in a democratic space.

Whether you’re a first-time voter or a seasoned one, it’s the day for your vote, your voice, and your power to be heard, seen, and felt. Let us always remember: true power rests not in the hands of our government officials, but in us—the sovereign Filipino people. Every single one of our votes count, and it holds the immense power of shaping the present and the future of our country. So, as you step into your assigned polling place, take a moment to discern and reflect with purpose, courage, and conscience. Vote wisely not just for yourself, but for the Filipino people as well.

SHS engages in Tamang Kandidato Voter Education Forum

The Grade 12 students convened at the Pope Francis Servant Leadership hall in the morning of May 5, 2025 for a Voter Education Forum titled "Tamang Ako Para Sa Tamang Kandidato." Organized by Hiraya in partnership with Votenet Philippines, the forum invited Ms. Mary Ruth Tablate and Ms. Estela Marie Alvarez as its resource speakers.

Ms. Laurice Paconla, SHS Assistant Principal for Student Formation, opened the session by citing the forum as an avenue for preparing students as they are sent out into the world post-graduation. Commending the students for showing up, she shared, "That's what our country needs, young people like you who show up." She cited the students' opportunity to vote for the first time as a way to show up for their country, "Your voice will matter." This was followed by the introduction of the speakers, Ms. Mary Ruth Tablate and Ms. Estela Marie Alvarez.

Ms. Alvarez began with the theme of love and courtship, connecting it with many candidates' goals to "court" individuals into choosing and voting for them. She stressed the forum’s interactive approach to fostering informed voting and cited the Constitution’s call for governance rooted in collective ideals. A key point in her discussion was how the power of authority and governance emanate from the sovereign Filipino people, and the government's role to embody their collective ideals and aspirations, "Mahala ang tamang ako na bumo ng tamang tayo, at para maabot ang ating pinagsama-samang pangarap."

Next, Ms. Tablate explained the jurisdiction of different government branches, checks and balances, as well as citizens' duty to hold officials accountable for upholding their responsibility as public servants to the Filipino people. She also detailed the party-list system, as well as the qualites expected of senators and government officials.

The session concluded with everyone reciting the Preamble of the 1987 Constitution.

Throughout the session, students engaged in breakout group activities where they were able to exchange and share their learnings and insights.

The Grade 11 students proceeded with the same forum in the afternoon.

Pope Francis, head of the Roman Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State, has passed away at the age of 88. The announcement was made by the Vatican in an official video statement on Monday morning.

In what would be his final public appearance, the pope had just recently shared his Easter greetings to an estimated crowd of more than 35,000 people on Sunday from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Pope Francis made history as the first Latin American to head the Catholic Church. His papacy was marked by a focus on humility, environmental responsibility, and outreach to the marginalized. He authored several influential encyclicals including Lumen Fidei, Laudato Si', and Fratelli Tutti, which addressed the importance of faith, environmental stewardship, and global solidarity.

See snapshots of the Grade 11's session for the Balota screening organized by Hiraya.

Balota centers on Emmy, a strict yet respected teacher in a small barangay who is appointed to the Board of Election Inspectors in her local precinct. The film follows her as she navigates a world that closely mirrors our own—one plagued by corruption and violence—all over a single, significant box of ballots. Emmy’s journey tests her courage, wit, and unwavering belief in fair elections.

RECAPPED | Senior High attends Balota Screening

On April 11, 2025, the Senior High School department gathered at the Virginia Chiongbian Theater in two intervals: Grade 12 in the morning and Grade 11 in the afternoon. The event featured a special screening of Balota, organized by Hiraya and their moderator, Mr. Alven Rey Labadan.

A talkback session followed the screening, where students had the opportunity to engage with guest speakers who shared their reflections on the film’s themes and drew meaningful connections to real-life issues in governance and civic responsibility.

Among the speakers was Bernadette Therese R. Deldig, ISLC President, who took the stage alongside esteemed guests Atty. Cirille Anne L. Dumalos, Mr. Isaiah M. Crisanto, and Ms. Therese Lasquite—renowned voices in their respective fields—whose insights deepened the audience’s understanding of the film and reinforced the ongoing relevance of integrity within our democratic processes.

The talkback featured a rich exchange of reflections from the speakers. The discussion centered on key scenes from Balota, shedding light on flaws in the electoral system and stressing the urgency of educating the youth on democratic values. The idea was raised that it is the younger generation—not the older—that holds the real power to shape the nation’s future. The speakers also emphasized that each vote counts, framing elections as a powerful equalizer in society. Drawing from personal experiences with the Commission on Human Rights, they invited students to reflect on the value of life, justice, and accountability within the electoral process.

These reflections became even more grounded in reality when Danielle Geroso (12-Animo) shared that, on his way to school that very day, he saw rallies taking place—highlighting how civic unrest and political movements aren’t distant issues but part of students’ lived experiences. Leona Rodriguez (11-Gaudium) spoke her reflections on the problematic image of democracy our country holds.

With the upcoming mayoral elections, the program’s timing felt especially significant, offering a timely space for insight and dialogue during a crucial moment for the community.

Deldig crowned Oration Champion in CESAFI Contest

Bernadette Therese Deldig (12-Animo) won first place in the CESAFI Season 24 Oratorical Speaking Contest, held on April 4, 2025, at the University of San Carlos – Downtown Campus. A total of 14 schools participated in the event, which tackled the theme, "Artificial Intelligence as the Ultimate Environmental Ally."

Despite this being her first oration contest, Bernadette rose to the challenge with guidance from her coach, Ms. Ralvielyn Caballes, and family friends skilled in oration. Her preparation was particularly intense, as she only learned she'd represent the school on March 26, leaving just nine days to write, memorize, and rehearse while balancing her other school commitments.

With only one full day to rehearse for the the competition, she drew strength from her faith, "I held on to the belief that God will never put us in situations that He will not carry us through. He always has a plan; and this thought, along with the support of my loved-ones, fueled me to keep going."

Bernadette expressed her gratitude for everyone who supported her journey in the competition, "Firstly, I thank God for this blessing. I am firm in the belief that everything in my life is a blessing from Him. Secondly, I thank my family, loved-ones, and Ignatian Formators who fueled me with their love and support." As she prepared to take the stage, Bernadette received encouraging messages from a number of her Ignatian Formators, "It warmed my heart."

She offered encouragement to those hesitant about joining competitions or engaging in public speaking, "Don’t let negative thoughts get the best of you – those are just thoughts; those aren’t your reality. Also, it’s important that you surround yourself with people who uplift you and always remember that you are never alone, He is with you."

Congratulations once again, Bernadette! The Ateneo Hearter community is immensely proud of you. AMDG!

OPINION | "Is My Job Future-Proof" A Question Prompted by the Evolution of AI

Artisan, a company selling artificially intelligent (AI) employees to other companies, offering a more alternative futuristic approach to traditional employment. With the rise of AI in society, this can be seen as increasingly common as companies explore this new type of employee. Artisan’s goal is to change societal norms by recruiting AI employees rather than human employees to maximize efficiency.

The company strives to do the long and tedious work of humans, so that humans may utilize their efforts into something that the company thinks can be greater. This stance that Artisan has taken on the job market with their non-traditional approach has the high potential of having a major instability in the job market, which negatively impacts society, as not only do humans become heavily reliant on AI, but it also creates a world where individuals struggle to be able to make a living for themselves.

With this, there are three major issues companies similar to Artisan have this approach, these issues include but are not limited to, degrees that individuals have studied 3+ years for, and accumulated debt can possibly become redundant as they are not able to get a job, high unemployment rates for people, which then affects the current living crisis, and then the increased mental health issues, as well as the increased loss of unique and diverse talents that can be presented within companies that have humans rather than AI.

The adoption of AI in the workplace can be considered a smart financial investment, as it eliminates the need for traditional salaries, leaving companies with more funds and potentially providing a competitive advantage in the market (Terra, 2024). With this, AI is perceived as a beneficial investment for most companies. However, this raises concerns about the importance as well as how necessary university and college degrees will become in the future, potentially labeling them as obsolete. Students like myself hearing the possibility of degrees becoming obsolete can lead students to toss and turn in self-doubt on the decision of whether or not they should even continue studying after high school, then creating doubts on whether their career of choice is worth pursuing.

With that self-doubt, it has the possibility to create problems in students' decisions about their education and future careers. Many students may feel anxious or uncertain, fearing that the degrees they are excited to pursue could become irrelevant, ultimately wasting their time and effort (Young, 2024).
As a student already facing the tough decision of choosing a degree, it has now been made even harder with the soon implementation of AI employees that is threatening not only my future career but also others by making them redundant. Furthermore, this confusion as well as the uncertainty created by AI implementation may affect students' motivation and academic performance. Some might adopt a poor mindset, thinking, "If this won't lead to a future career, then it doesn't matter," which could lead to declining grades and a lack of drive. This domino effect risks both current educational efforts as well as students' future aspirations and careers.

The rise of AI implementation for jobs in the future poses significant challenges related to unemployment, affecting not only students contemplating tertiary education after high school but also those currently employed in roles that are increasingly being taken over by AI. Cecchi-Dimeglio (2023) estimates that AI could impact around 300 million jobs globally, representing approximately 9.1% of all employment.
This has the potential to create widespread unemployment, with intense consequences for society. As Young (2024) states, high unemployment rates lead to an uproar of issues, many of which stem from reduced household income. These challenges include increased stress and strain on families, often forcing them to live paycheck to paycheck, and limiting their disposable income, which then affects their ability to maintain an adequate standard of living.

On a broader scale, these issues in relation to unemployment have an effect beyond individual households, negatively impacting the economy as a whole. For countries like the Philippines, where the economy is already considered fragile, the implementation or even the widespread replacement of human workers with AI could have severe consequences, further diminishing the country's economic stability and growth, and leading to a nationwide living crisis.

The job market has become a minefield making it more difficult for individuals to find workplaces that are taking the traditional approach by hiring humans rather than falling into the newly attempted societal norm companies like Artisan are trying to make. This also creates uncertainties for future college graduates due to various factors that must be carefully considered before choosing a career.
These include how much the job is in demand, salary, and, a newly added factor that must be questioned and debated is whether or not the job is considered to be future-proof. As a student myself, who is aspiring to pursue a career that falls within the "danger zone" of jobs potentially being replaced by AI, I frequently find myself juggling many questions in my mind like: "Is this career still worth pursuing?" "Will any alternative career I choose be future-proof?" "If I pursue a degree in this field, will it be a waste of time?" "Will another career choice provide enough income to support me, my future family, and expenses?", "Are my current studies even worth the effort?"

These questions contribute to a large increase in anxiety, further affecting already stressed students and posing a possible risk to their mental health. Beyond the individual impacts, the rapid widespread implementation of AI also threatens to diminish the diversity, creativity, and unique talents that individuals bring to their chosen professions. This loss of human contribution could dull the vibrancy of the world and disrupt society's routine, possibly making society very sad and seen as rather dystopian.

While it can be seen that AI is a more efficient and relevant approach for the future, matching up with society's perceived trajectory, its implementation as a replacement for human workers can cause significant consequences. Introducing AI into the workforce could disrupt society, potentially leading to a challenging and uncertain future for most, if not all. Looking beyond the challenges of securing a job in the future, there is also a risk of a quick increase in mental health issues among younger students. These students may feel pressured early on to navigate an already difficult decision, which is choosing a career, and then having that being made even more complicated by the need to consider whether their chosen path will remain viable, or if their chosen path will be taken over by the quick implementation of AI.

ISLC & Promus join Ecology Symposium

Fr. Gabriel Lamug-Nanawa, S.J., led a keynote on “Ecological Conversion Along the Path of Laudato Si’” at St. Joseph Hall, Sacred Heart Center on March 29, 2025, calling for a stronger commitment to environmental stewardship.

Representatives from the Ignatian Servant Leaders’ Council and Promus, accompanied by their chaperone, Mr. Nathaniel Niar, attended on behalf of Sacred Heart School - Ateneo de Cebu.

Fr. Lamug-Nanawa urged the participants to move beyond technology-driven solutions and embrace a contemplative approach, recognizing nature as a reflection of God.

Quoting United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, who called climate change “the defining issue of our time,” he emphasized the need for moral and spiritual transformation alongside scientific advancements.

The discussion challenged the technocratic paradigm, warning against relying solely on technology without ethical responsibility.

Following the talk, the participants took an Ecological Commitment Pledge, vowing to adopt sustainable practices and advocate for environmental protection through tree planting.

The session concluded with a group photo and a closing prayer.
