Bonifacio Day
Andres Bonifacio, born on November 30, 1863 in Tondo, Manila, came from humble beginnings as a warehouseman and self-educated patriot to become the fiery soul of the Philippine Revolution against Spanish colonial rule. Founding the Katipunan (K*K) in 1892, he built a secret society that united ordinary Filipinos in a vow to achieve independence through armed struggle, rejecting centuries of oppression. In late August 1896, the revolution officially began with the Cry of Pugad Lawin, when Bonifacio and his followers tore their cédulas (community tax certificates) as a symbolic act of defiance against the Spaniards.
Also known as the “Supremo,” Bonifacio’s fearless leadership and commitment to freedom empowered him to personally lead charges in the early battles despite limited resources and arms. His bravery inspired thousands of Filipinos to risk for liberty, that yearning for independence burned brightest among the masses rather than only in the elite reformist circles. Though despite facing divisions and betrayal, he never wavered in his belief that true sovereignty belonged to the Filipino people.
Executed on May 10, 1897 following a controversial trial orchestrated by rival revolutionary groups, Bonifacio’s death at the age of 33 cemented his place as a symbol of courage and selfless sacrifice.
