In a display of deep patriotism and solemn tradition, Mandaue City College (MCC) held a ritual incineration of unserviceable national flags at the school grounds on Friday, June 5, 2026.
Spearheaded by the Color Bearer Marshal Corps (CBMC), the ceremony was conducted in strict accordance with Republic Act No. 8491, also known as the Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines, ensuring utmost respect and final honors for the faded national symbols.
The event commenced with the final lowering and retrieval of MCCโs primary Philippine flag, a silent witness to many generations of students through years of dedicated service. Before the incineration, CBMC representatives showcased various historical Philippine flags, including the iconic Katipunan (K*K) banner hoisted by Andres Bonifacio, alongside its historical variants, offering the audience a brief journey through the nation's revolutionary past.
The climax of the ceremony drew a reverent silence as the old Philippine flag was rested upon a cauldron and slowly reduced to ashes. Everyone in attendance stood at attention, saluting the burning symbol as a final tribute to its years of enduring service through rain and shine, through every triumph and adversary faced by the institution.
Following the incineration, the flag's ashes were carefully gathered and buried within the school grounds. Entombed in the very earth it once watched over, the flag found its final resting place, ensuring that while newer generations of students come and go, its legacy remains permanently marked into the institution.
To conclude the ceremony, College President Dr. Joey Rivamonte shared a poignant reflection with the community.
"Todayโs ceremony reminds us that patriotism begins with respectโrespect for our nation, respect for our symbols, and respect for the sacrifices of those who came before us," Dr. Rivamonte said, as he commended the organizers. "Your dedication reflects the spirit of service and excellence that we continue to nurture in this institution."
