I'M NOT A FAN OF FILIPINO POLITICS, but I had to say this anyway!
There is a quiet, aching gravity that settles over history when a man simply chooses to stand his ground. In our country, we have grown accustomed to the theater of power in retreat—the sudden frailty, the neck braces, the hospital beds, and the inevitable wheelchairs rolled out the moment the gavel threatens to fall. We have learned to expect spectacles of pity from those who once held the world in their hands.
Yet, when the twilight came for him, there was none of that.
I was never a fan. I never bowed before his him, nor did I blindly agree with every tempest he stirred. But human as I am, a lump formed in my throat watching an elderly man—weathered by decades of public scrutiny, worn down by the sheer weight of a nation’s unresolved burdens—stand utterly alone before the world. He made no excuses. He summoned no theatrical tears. He did not seek refuge behind sudden infirmity. In an era starved of dignity, he simply stood still.
There is an undeniable, heartbreaking bravery in seeing a former president face the tempest with an unyielding posture. At his core, he was a leader who fought the darkness the only raw, imperfect way he knew how. History will dissect his choices, the law will parse his deeds, and the world may demand its reckoning. But judgment belongs to the Almighty, who alone knows the deepest chambers of a man’s conscience and the true cost of trying to carry a people on tired, aging shoulders. It hurts the spirit to see an old soul, who belongs in the quiet embrace of home, being summoned across oceans to answer for the battles he fought for us.
I write this down not to canonize a politician, but for the sake of memory. I leave these words behind for my children, and for their children after them, so that years from now, when the dust of rhetoric has settled, they may know the truth of this hour. I want them to know that once, in a land where leaders so often crumbled into shameful dramatics when cornered, we had an old man who stood tall, took the blows, and faced the consequences without flinching.
No wheelchair. No drama. Just an old soldier standing in the storm, leaving the rest to eternity.
