In The Reason I Jump, Naoki Higashida, an autistic boy from Japan who wrote the book at 13, answers questions about how he experiences the world.

One question really made me think of Calden:

“Why can it still be difficult to do something even after you’ve been taught how?”

Naoki explains that sometimes, the understanding is already there. The hard part is accessing it and doing it when it is needed.

Very Calden.

There are things he knows today, then tomorrow, parang back to square one ulit. 😅 So we teach it again. And again. And again.

Dati, madaling isipin, “Nakalimutan na naman?”

But we are learning that with Calden, repetition does not always mean he forgot. Sometimes, that is simply how he learns.

So if it takes ten times, twenty times, or a hundred times, we repeat. No pressure. No race. We just keep going.

And to all his teachers (and OT) who patiently teach, repeat, remind, and explain things all over again, thank you for meeting Calden where he is and never getting tired of helping him get there. 💙
