Last night, I had a 1-on-1 coaching session with Earl John Lopez, a fellow working student.
His goal? To earn enough to support his education while pursuing his passion.
Earl is a designer at heart, specializing in 3D modeling. But like many students, his experience so far has been limited to school projects, and he's not yet confident when it comes to handling clients in the real world.
In our session, we focused on how he, as a student, can start carving his path in the freelancing world. We began by reviewing the website portfolio he created as part of his assignment from me. Next, we discussed how he can leverage this portfolio—especially his school projects—to attract clients and showcase his skills in 3D modeling.
The key takeaway from our session? How to engage with potential clients confidently. My advice was simple but effective: be professional, communicate clearly, and show that you can deliver the work. It's all about making that strong first impression.
This advice is drawn from my own experiences, and it’s something I wish someone had told me when I was starting out.
How about you? What's your story of "Getting Started in Freelancing"? Did you struggle at first, or find it challenging to land and communicate with clients?
