Semana Santa

𝐑𝐄𝐂𝐀𝐏 | CCJE, CMA, SHS, AND CITE DOMINATE FOUNDATION DAY BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT

The Basketball Men’s Tournament at PHINMA Saint Jude College Manila’s Foundation Day delivered intense action and high-stakes competition on February 24, 2025. Teams from different colleges showcased their athleticism, strategy, and resilience, with standout performances and nail-biting finishes keeping the crowd on edge.

The tournament opened with the College of Criminal Justice Education (CCJE) asserting dominance over the College of Allied Health Sciences (CAHS) in an 86-71 victory. CCJE’s sharp shooting and defensive pressure kept CAHS from making a comeback, setting the tone for the competition.

One of the most lopsided games of the tournament saw the College of Information Technology Education (CITE) dismantling the Employees with an overwhelming 10-0 shutout. CITE’s superior teamwork and offensive ex*****on left the Employees struggling to find an opening.

The most dramatic battle of the tournament came when the College of Marketing and Accountancy (CMA) edged out the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) in a 79-78 nail-biter. CAS controlled most of the game, but CMA’s late-game heroics and clutch shooting sealed their hard-fought victory in the final moments.

The Senior High School (SHS) Department showcased its basketball superiority with consecutive wins. First, they steamrolled the College of Education (COED) in a commanding 73-28 triumph. They then continued their dominance with another decisive win over the Employees, proving to be a force in the tournament.

As Foundation Day festivities continue, the tournament has already produced unforgettable moments and fierce competition. With teams aiming for the top, more action-packed games are expected in the coming days, as the battle for basketball supremacy heats up.

𝐋𝐎𝐎𝐊 | THE VALENTINE'S DAY LAST FEBRUARY 14, 2025.

Valentine’s Day was celebrated with different students of the PHINMA Saint Jude College, some shared their sentiments about the occasion, revealing a mix of emotions ranging from excitement to indifference—and even heartbreak.

For some, being single is something to embrace. One student, Ashntie, summed it up lightheartedly: “Masaya lang, walang jowa.” Meanwhile, a group known as F5 echoed similar sentiments, jokingly saying, “Single pa rin, nililigawan pa rin yung tao. Puro single lang kami ngayong Valentine’s.”

Despite the usual romantic atmosphere surrounding February 14, others are unfazed. A student, whom doesn't wanna be named, shared a positive outlook, saying, “I’m good, masaya ang puso.” Another student, Mikiekon, admitted that Valentine’s Day feels like any other day—except when they see their crush: “Okay lang, parang normal day. Pag nakita si crush, kinikilig.”

However, not everyone shares the same enthusiasm. One student expressed sadness, revealing that she wore black on Valentine’s Day as a sign of being “brokenhearted.” Others, like Angela, are simply too busy to celebrate, saying, “Duty, duty lang.”

While Valentine’s Day means grand gestures and romantic celebrations for some, for many students, it’s just another day—with or without a special someone.

𝗣𝗔𝗛𝗜𝗠𝗔𝗞𝗔𝗦

𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐃𝐃𝐄𝐀𝐍 𝐍𝐄𝐖𝐒 | VP SARA DUTERTE FACES IMPEACHMENT; TRIAL OVER CORRUPTION ALLEGATION

The House of Representatives impeached Vice President Sara Duterte on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, after 153 lawmakers backed the complaint, surpassing the required threshold. The impeachment, rooted in allegations of fund misuse, graft, and betrayal of public trust, now moves to the Senate, where lawmakers will decide her fate. Despite Senate staff preparing for the transmittal of complaints, Senate President Francis Escudero dismissed any assumptions, stating the chamber will only act once proceedings are officially in progress.

Following the House vote, the Senate Secretary General instructed the Senate Public Relations and Information Bureau to prepare for the possible transmittal of impeachment complaints by 7 PM. Once received, senators will hold a trial to determine whether Duterte should be removed from office.

However, Senate President Francis Escudero dismissed reports that the Senate is actively preparing for the proceedings. “The Senate is not preparing for anything regarding impeachment. We cannot and will not assume anything until and unless it is a fact. The statements made by an over-eager staff were neither authorized by me nor proper,” Escudero stated.

Lawmakers have filed three impeachment complaints against Duterte. The first, led by Akbayan Party-List Rep. Perci Cendaña, accused Duterte of failing to account for 125 million pesos in confidential funds allocated to the Office of the Vice President (OVP) in 2022. Additionally, the complaint flagged 7 billion pesos in not-calculated cash advances from her tenure as Education Secretary. Former peace adviser Teresita Quintos Deles and Catholic priests Flaviano Villanueva and Robert Reyes co-signed the complaint, asserting that Duterte weakened congressional oversight by refusing to attend budget hearings.

The second complaint, filed by Bagong Alyansang Makabayan, focused on Duterte’s alleged misuse of confidential funds. Bayan Muna chairperson Neri Colmenares argued that her actions seriously betrayed the public trust. A combination of Catholic priests, civil society leaders, and lawyers submitted the third complaint, expanding the charges to include plunder, malversation, bribery, graft, and corruption.
The 70-page document outlined that Duterte personally authorized the release of 125 million pesos in confidential funds in 2022 and an additional 112.5 million pesos in 2023 while overseeing both the OVP and the Department of Education (DepEd). During House impeachment hearings, testimonies from government officials supported the allegations. Gina Acosta, a special disbursing officer of the OVP, confirmed that she released 125 million pesos in confidential funds to Col. Raymund Dante Lachica, commander of the Vice Presidential Security and Protection Group, in December 2022. Similarly, DepEd special disbursing officer Edward Fajarda testified that he transferred 37.5 million pesos in confidential funds to Col. Dennis Nolasco in early 2023. Both officials stated that Duterte directly ordered the transactions.

Initially, the House refused to give the impeachment complaints from Speaker Martin Romualdez while awaiting a possible fourth case. However, growing public pressure led to mass protests at the EDSA People Power Monument, where demonstrators demanded immediate action. Lawmakers finally decided to move forward with the case due to the strong support for the impeachment procedure. Reginald Velasco, the House Secretary General, verified that the fourth impeachment complaint against Duterte has received more than the necessary 102 signatures.“We have enough, 102 lang ang requirement. It was last reported 153 na. Pero wala pa kaming exact number until we report it to the plenary,” Velasco stated. As it proceeds, the additional complaint strengthens the case against the vice president.

New Year, parang nagsasabi, "Wala kahit anong hidwaan, ako Chinese, ikaw Pinoy, tayo pareho tao, tayo magsalo."

Happy Chinese New Year sa lahat!
